That's exactly what I did. One of the benefits of collecting "T" cards is they don't seem to lose their value too much (compared to some post-war cards). So you can usually resell at your cost ... and sometimes a little above. I think I bought the T205 Matty with mostly $ I made off selling a bunch of T205 commons. Anyway ... I love the T205 set. One of the first sets with bio's on the back ... I think. Maybe I'll win MLB's Beat The Streak one day and that will allow me to go for the complete T205 and T206 sets :-)

[QUOTE=Big Six;1634486]So I've got a few sets going at the same time - Diamond Stars, 51' Bowman, 54' Topps and 56' Topps - but going to focus my efforts on T205 for the time being...so far, here's my progress to date:

- 41/215
- 7 HofF (Brown, Jennings, Marquard, Mathewson, Speaker, Wallace w/ Cap & Wheat)

- all PSA 3 or SGC 40 except Chase - Both Ears (PSA 4) & Wheat (SGC 50)

Totally Awesome !
Great Thread

How is everyone doing lately with their T205 set?

Here is a recent upgrade from eBay:

I also re-scanned my set over the weekend which can be viewed here.

Your eye-appeal heavy "3's" were cool enough, why drive yourself crazy with 6's?

If I can downgrade to a 3 that is close to any of my higher grade cards I will. But I am looking for the best looking cards that aren't NRMT or better.... My fave grade is a 2......because a nice stain on back will make almost any high grade and better looking card a 2'ish. I look at the card first and then the grade, which seems the opposite of the registry marketers scheme.

You will easily find those cards in grades and conditions you want if you are patient. It's all about finding what pleases you. These new ones please me.

ps...see post #110, Mcintire below is a 2 with a stain on back . I want every one to look like that.

My batch dropped off at White Plains a few weeks ago just came back...nothing terrribly shocking though I wish the Baker was a 3...it’ll still fit right in to my set...

Nice cards Matt! First T205's I've seen in the new slabs. I think the Baker should've got a 3 as well, at least from the front, but like you said overall the grades are pretty much in line with the old slabs.

Nice cards ..
Baker could have been a 2 to a 3 on any given day. I have to say I like the uniformity of the new SGC holders and have been mostly neutral until now.

This Collins was downgraded, fortunately. Give me a small wrinkle on the back any day and I am good. I just want my cards to have nice eye appeal and not be altered .
A pick up on its way in.

According to the label, it's the "One L" (misspelled name on back) version.

I questioned it in my mind when I first saw the post three days ago, before I remembered that the variation is on the back.

Nice cards Leon. Reminds me of the days when I put together my T205 set card by card and went strictly for raw, great eye appeal cards.
I didn't know there were any set collectors still out there the way everyone goes for types or HOFers only or team sets. Good to hear.

There are definitely fewer set collectors than there used to be and my guess is the trend continues as us older guys get older and younger people get more addicted to their phones.

Where in the world do you guys find decent raw T205s? Or are they crackouts?
You don't have to worry about me being competition anytime soon. Just genuinely curious.

Good to know, Scott. Thanks. Anywhere else decent raw ones are purchased? Aside from our own BST of course.

I know there's a couple dealers besides me at the big east coast shows who have raw ones at least occasionally. T206's are easier to find, but the T205's are out there.

I really appreciate the feedback, Scott. I have been aggressively buying vintage football for the last several months but have been thinking about buying a little baseball again after the first of the year. Before when I tried prewar baseball, I never could make up my mind about precisely what I liked, but I keep coming back to the T205s. Sorry to hijack this thread.

You can't hijack a T205 thread by talking about T205's! Those of us who love them are smarter, better looking, and more likable than those T206 guys.

LOL! I tried on several different issues the first couple of times that I tried prewar baseball, including T206, T207, T205 and an E card or two. I actually ended up collecting Obaks but ultimately decided I would rather collect a major league issue. I sold them off and plunged back into 1950s baseball and especially vintage football, which I am still enjoying, but baseball calls again. I have had a lot of experiences collecting a lot of different stuff, but those T205s are the one prewar issue that I keep noticing and being effected by. So, after the New Year starts and I have some card debt paid for, I think I will pick up a few T205s. Though I am a Cardinals fan, it is hard to beat NY baseball. So, I am thinking about collecting the Brooklyn players---may even play with the backs although I know they aren't as big a deal as the T206 backs. I would love to have all ungraded, but we'll see what is available then.

While I find the T206 a little more attractive, there is nothing wrong with the T205's. In fact for a prewar issue, it's a set that is definitely attainable. Not a huge amount of cards, etc. I am plugging away at both, but finding it very expensive to make a lot of progress on both, but just taking my time plugging away.

T205 is much more difficult than t206. There are a few of the short prints that are really tough. I was able to complete a t206 set without the big 3(4) in a little over a year. Then I began working on a t205 set. After 4 years, I was still not done and gave up. I came back to the set in 2014 and finally completed it this year. I still have a few of the short prints that I eventually want to upgrade at some point.

I feel that the popularity of the t206 set makes the cards much more available. Every auction has plenty to choose from, but many times there are few or no t205s available. It is very rare to see an auction with a good selection of t205s, especially the rarer cards.

A few years ago, I contemplated collecting the Brooklyn T205s (or Cardinals) and even created a master list. Stupidly, I threw it away. I can go back and recreate it. Is this a realistic goal? I am not even certain that I would go all in on the backs and might perhaps just be satisfied with an example of each player. Not really sure yet... I just have regained the hankering this week.

I have a near complete master set fronts and backs of the Cubs. 148 of 151 cards. All slabbed or going in for slabbing. took me 3 years to get there. Missing 2 Hindus and Mordecai Brown Drum.

Is that Elberfield trimmed? The bat ear bottom corners worry me.

Ken...nice work!! My goal the last 5-6 years has been the 123 Sovereign back T205s, and I'm now down to the last one...George Mullin. Any heros out there?

Cheers,
Geno

That is a cool looking card.

And to answer Scott's question above- I just recently acquired the Elberfield and once you said something I looked closer. I compared it to several other T205s I have and it is shorter than all of them. The seller had automatic refunds for 14 days so I am reluctantly (as I don't like to do that) returning it to the seller. I don't really want to knowingly buy a card with sharp corners that is a fair amount smaller than all (that I checked) the others I have. Better safe than sorry. Thanks again!!
ps...I think the description, when I went back and read it, said some of these cards were in GAI holders before

Thanks, Leon.

Also, as Scott mentioned, the Elberfeld is trimmed unfortunately. The gold probably does not "roll" over the edges when you look at it under a loupe.

Finally picked up a Speaker not too long ago. Waited well over a year for the right example to surface.
