Default 2019 Hall of Fame voting question

So I know who is on the regular ballot and I can guess who will get in from it but who is on the “veterans” ballot in December ? I don’t even know what era is up for election last this year . Any insight is appreciated . Thanks

The "Today's Game Committee (for 1988 - Present) will meet at the 2018 Winter Meetings, and consider players for election.

From the Baseball HOF website:

"Four separate electorates considered by era will create a single composite ballot of managers, umpires, executives and long-retired players on rotating basis, with the Today's Game Committee candidates to be considered at the 2016 Winter Meetings for induction in 2017 and again at the 2018 Winter Meetings for induction in 2019; the Modern Baseball Committee candidates to be considered at the 2017 Winter Meetings for induction in 2018 and again at the 2019 Winter Meetings for induction in 2020; and the Golden Days and Early Baseball committees candidates to be considered at the 2020 Winter Meetings for induction in 2021. The cycle then repeats with the Today's Game and Modern Baseball committees each meeting twice every five years, the Golden Days Committee meeting once every five years and the Early Baseball Committee meeting once every 10 years."

Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Mark McGwire, Lou Piniella and George Steinbrenner were on the ballot last time and not elected. I would expect some of those guys on it.

2 years ago when they voted on this class, Selig and Schuerholtz were the winners, no players. Lou Piniella came in 3rd so I’m guessing he’ll be back. Pure speculation but my guess is Will Clark and Orel Hershiser get another turn on the ballot. David Cone and Bret Saberhagen get added on. Also 1-2 new executives.

I am going to guess Jim Leyland and perhaps Mike Scocia (based on yesterday's announcement) would be on the ballot this year.

I highly doubt any players will be elected on this ballot.

I can see them rallying around 1 executive or manager just to elect somebody. But the players this year all fall just a bit short for the voter’s liking.

Look at Harold Baines stats and you will see that he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He is in the Top 50 All Time in many statistical categories.

When was this vote? I don't see Albert Belle on any lists past 2007 when he fell off. And McGwire only fell off in 2016. I highly doubt a committee would vote on him again so soon.

Since there's already two juicers in now, can't see any reason to keep McGwire out.

Best,

DHs that aren't elite hitters don't belong in the Hall. Harold was a fine player for a long time but his peak was nowhere near high enough. If Baines gets in before Edgar, that's a crime.

Does anyone know where the 2020 HOF selection process for former Negro Leaguers stands? I had heard about this a couple of years ago and was wondering if it is still happening...

I agree Baines isn’t a hall of famer. Based on voting trends I’d put money on Edgar getting in this year.

They are all eligible again to be considere for the veterans committee to vote on. They still need to get to the committee and then get the necessary 75% from the committee, which will be no easy feet given the committees history.

Is there really any doubt about Pudge? He'd noticeably shrunk when he came to the Yankees. Don't have any other explanation for it.

I never heard Nolan"s name mentioned anywhere before, nor have I heard any credible sources about Rickey either.
Pudge, Bagwell, and Piazza always were mentioned.

Canseco more or less confirmed Rickey by saying they just inducted one the week he (Rickey) was inducted. Nolan Ryan retired before there was much public conversation about PED use in baseball, but if you go only by the stats, he's more suspicious than anyone else (including even Barry Bonds). We've discussed it here before, and a Google search will reveal that plenty of others have discussed it as well. Not that we have proof of anything untoward in that clubhouse.

Yes, I wrote directly to The President of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Jeff Idelson, and he assured me that the Negro Leaguers would be on the Early Baseball ballot in 2020 and again every ten years afterwards.

I know the baseball HOF is different from some sports in that there's no minimum number of players who have to be elected at any time, BUT I think a lot of people would agree that even with the Negro League inductions in the past, these are still players who are not represented equally in the Hall. It would be nice if they mandated at least one player would be inducted with the special once a decade vote. Otherwise it seems like a hollow gesture. There's no way the Negro League players who have been inducted represent the only players worthy of induction.

As a follower of the various HOF Veterans Committees for 40 years an argument could be validly made that there are still many deserving Negro Leaguers not enshrined ( my last count was approximately 25 who could go in ) as well as that many 19th and early 20th century ball players who could also be enshrined. However, I don't think a mandate would help because that was done in the 1970s and then again in 2006 and the HOF doesn't like being told what to do concerning its elections and another mandate I don't think will happen. I also don't hold much hope for many others from those categories / eras because of past voting histories and comments from some HOF members. This has been discussed here previously and the consensus is that something earth-shaking will have to happen to get more players from those 2 categories / eras elected.

Because he was on the ballot last year. Needing 12 of 16 members to vote for him, he received 6 or fewer votes.

George Steinbrenner should be in the Hall.

The man had a passion to win, and took the Yankees from an afterthought to Series champions. Love him or hate him, he was great for the game, New York, and an example for other owners who don't seem to care at all how their team fares.

Strike One: Winfield/Howard Spira.
Strike Two: Illegal presidential campaign contribution, which led to...
Strike Three: Knocked him off the IOC committee.

However, he did receive a presidential pardon.

I am sorry Paul, but I'm not following. ?

I will look up the connection with Winfield and Spira, however do the other points exclude entry to the Hall?

Obviously I do not know the details so I'm asking.

I will look up the connection with Winfield and Spira, however do the other points exclude entry to the Hall?

Obviously I do not know the details so I'm asking.
Hey Lou, Coming from a lifelong Yankees fan (me), my feeling is that it's about George's overall behavior. Nothing excludes anybody into the HOF, except what the voters think.

However, if Selig can get in with his looking the other way during the steroid era, then I think you have a valid point.

It blows my mind that Steinbrenner's indiscretions would keep him out of the HOF but a guy like Tom Yawkey was suitable for induction.

Steinbrenner loved to win. When I was growing up, my Royals and the Yankees were hooking up in the playoffs ( in the 70's ) with my Royals losing each time.

I hated the Yankees back then. However, looking back, George purchased the Yankees and restored the glory back to the team. It wasn't always pretty, but the man did what he thought would produce a winner.

As an adult, I wish more owners had the passion to win like Steinbrenner did.

Present day billionaire owners with no desire to win. I don't get it.

When the Yankees do well, baseball does well. That's the reality of it.
