These aren't new pickups per se, but they are some of the highlights of the first pile of cards I ever submitted for grading. Since they arrived today, I am considering them December pickups...

The Kaline is the cool Band Aid variation.

Attended my first card show in years today, and was able to knock a few classics off my list for a reasonable price. I've wanted that Rickey rookie since I was in Little League, and I had the 69T Brooks when I was a kid, but foolishly traded it for a Piazza rookie card. Derp. I snagged a 67T Yaz because that was his triple crown year, and I'm trying to collect the main card from each player's triple crown year. Sadly, no one there had a 66T Frank Robinson.

I've been a Tigers fan since I could crawl, and while the 78 Topps rookie cards of 3 of my all time favorite players leave something to be desired aesthetically, it's nice to finally own them.

Do you know about the 1978 Topps Burger King versions of those three RCs? Definitely worth looking out for also!

No I didn't. Interesting. Just looked it up; apparently, they issued 22 card team sets for the Astros, Rangers, Tigers and Yankees. Great....another subset to collect. Hahahaha

Have been on a rough budget, hence major collecting drought, these past several months. Still, N54 smiled on me this past Thursday when two members sent great stuff my way for free!

Thanks to Snapolit1 for the Wheaties panels of two of my favorite 1930s players, Mel Ott and Lefty Grove, and to EYECOLLECTVINTAGE for the Dr. K signed Baseball Digest and jumbo card.

Haven't posted in a while. These are some cards that I have picked up in the last few months. The All-Star is trimmed and rough, but it is a Topps Venezuela and one of the last two Venezuela cards that I need. The Magic Ruboff is for my Braves & Brewers logo cards for Hank's playing days.

I can relate!

I recently just finished purchasing my wife a new car so money has been rather thin lately to say the least.
Once purchased, I needed a few things like snow tires and rims, windows tinted, Husky floor liners, mud flaps, and to get it rustproofed.
I plan on keeping this car a long time so I got an oil/filter change and managed to get a coat of wax on it before the snow flew.

That aside, I did manage to bid on a few cards tonight but got my butt promptly kicked!

Hopefully after Christmas, if Santa is good to me, I can get back to bidding more frequently?

I stand corrected. I seen a GM card go last night for over $200 so I didn't think I'd have a chance on this one.
I threw in my max bid and went to bed only to wake this morning to see that I won it.
It's been a tough one trying to get but glad to say I finally own one.

4 more '52s down and a couple of '71 upgrades. I wish Topps had laid out the McLain better; the team name not being centered over the photo always makes it look wrong. Find a centered team name and the photo is off; find a centered photo and the name is off. Always wondered how the grading companies assess centering on this card.

The '71s are PSA 7s; Russel and Erautt are PSA 5s; Sain (correct bio) is a PSA 4.

Ever have a card that on the surface shouldn’t really qualify as anything special, but for some reason absolutely captivates you? For me this is it. Probably because this was one of the first old cards I got my hands on as a kid back in the late 1980’s. No, the ‘54 Bowman set is not going to win any accolades for design among it’s peers, and all things considered this is not exactly the best likeness in the world of Campy - who looks like he was just made to run with the pitchers and is now considering whether or not he needs to go throw up. I don’t know though, there is something about the colors on this one and that hat - is it a beanie? Is it an early batting helmet...? I don’t know, just always been intriguing to me. Was glad to pick this one up still in great shape and fairly cheap.

Happy Holidays!
-John

It is a batting helmet. The original photo matches but the artist who did the Flexichrome did a bad job of shading and the foreshortening effect is messed up. I love clean 54 Bowmans. Nice card.

Thanks. I did find this pic online. Looks like they also took some airbrushing liberty with the "B". And is this a hat or a helmet? Seeing the B&W picture I'm not sure...

Great looking 52's, again, Dave!

I assume the Matt Batts is also a 5? You certainly have a knack for getting some great looking cards!

Adam, nice timing on the Morris and Trammell rookies. I'm curious as to which show you attended, it's been quite awhile for me to attend a local show. Darren nice Greatest Moment card - if there ever were a set that takes patience to put together that is it.

Been a bit slower for me with Post-war acquisitions. Slowly finishing off my '62 set.

Yeah, I didn't even realize the HOF induction was coming up that soon. Didn't even cross my mind, I was just looking for those cards. Grew up idolizing those 80s Tigers. The show was at a Hilton in Holland. I live near GR on the west side. Apparently they do it there a few times a year, next one in February. It wasn't that big or anything, but a nice turnout of dealers, and a lot of really nice guys. Had some good conversations, and got some good deals.

Side note about Morris, he was at a West Michigan Whitecaps game last summer signing autographs, and I was dying to go. My wife ended up having a work function that night which I had to attend as well, so I missed it. I wasn't happy about it, but stuff happens. Now that he's a HOFer though, I wonder if he'll come back to do that again.

Sweet Yaz, btw. I've always dug that 62 set. Same with the 87 set. Some guys don't like that wood grain, but I love it.

James,

You picked up the ‘67 Cleon Jones Test Disc; awesome pickup! It is on the silver foil, correct?

I never knew about these discs. Now I've seen two this month! Pretty great pickup!

Has anybody else noticed the optical illusion on the 62 Yaz card? Three bat handles and two barrels?

My Del Crandall card arrived today. I don't know grading very well seeing as this card only graded a 5.
OC and a slight tilt are likely the killers I assume?

Probably a hard to see surface wrinkle on the back. Card looks like a 6-7 to me.

John, I have twisted, angled this card enough times under natural light and my magnified light and I still don't see anything?
The back, if anything, looks more mint than the front to me.
The only thing I was able to find, was a slight corner touch in the upper right (which I wrote about back some time ago) so maybe under a loupe, with the centering, they decided a 5 was what this card should be graded at?
I also think, despite the slight touch and the centering, this card, under normal circumstances and based on what I have seen and learned, should also be at least a 6 but more of a 7 in my opinion as well.
Sorry about the bad scan. Seems, for some reason, SGC's don't scan as well for me?

Edit: new back scan after re-cleaning my screen

Dale, great card. But, I suspect your scanner does not have the type of scanning element (CCD element) that will enable you to make non-blurry, clear scans of slabbed cards.

Nothing crazy, but a few cool 70s Topps cards I picked up over the weekend. I love Killebrew cards where he's in his batting stance. They should call him "The Logo" like Jerry West.

Nice pickups fellas!
I was a bit more into prewar this collecting season, but 2018 will be back to my roots in post war - really thinking about a bunch of mint stuff from the 70s

Default December Pickups!

I did not make a lot of additions to my collection in 2017, but here are a couple that I picked up this month. The Munson is a card that I have wanted since I first started collecting in 1980, but just never pulled the trigger on one, I just couldn't pass this one up with it's centering!

Thanks Val.

You are correct, mine scanning is the non CCD type. Currently in the market for one but I am unsure if I can get one that also photocopies and prints?

I need those features for my son's schooling, and I don't necessarily want to get into multiple units if I can help it.
