Not really on-topic, but thought I'd respond to this:
"I sure wish one of the manufacturers would make T218/Goudey pages and 51-52 Bowman pages again!" I hate seeing cards through the page that I'm looking at, so to display smaller cards in a binder I cut down a 3/5 card and slide that behind Goudeys etc. It also gives the smaller cards a nice little frame. |

If you haven't already done it or been told....Business card sheets available from Office Max fit 1951/52 Bowman's just fine.

I would like to complete my 55 Bowman baseball set this year. I have 280 of the 324 (includes variations) or 86% complete. I need 36 Hi#s and 8 low #s. Aaron, Banks, and Campy are the big ones left to get. Some of the High #s are kind of tough to find in the condition I am looking for. Grade 5-6 or raw equal. The hunt is a lot fun. The national in Chicago this year will help.
I do have extras to trade if anybody is interested. |

About 60% complete with 1965 Topps. Doubt that I finish it in 2017 as I have increasingly gotten interested in 1960s football and T205s. But you never know!

Running
Another update as I lowered my version of the Topps Run 1952-1980 down to just 56 cards, lowered from the 75 cards I needed in Post #33 above about 6 weeks ago.
Just 4 really high priced ones to go , which I am not going to worry about in 2017. But I hope to drop this down into single digits this year while still collecting all the side sets, Prewar cards and HOFers. I am blessed to be able to even consider this Good luck everyone and Happy New Year!

Sixteen to go to finish a 1967T baseball set. All high numbers with Shannon and Red Sox TC being the most expensive.
Hoping to knock this one off in 2017.

This is a very good idea for a thread. I must have missed it.
Topps set collecting is my secondary focus. I am primarily a Cardinals team set collector, but after that, I collect complete Topps sets (base and update/traded). Having started probably 10 or 12 years ago, since it is a secondary focus for me, I have not gotten as far down as I would like, but I am making progress. I currently have Topps sets from 2016 down to 1967. I am currently working on 1966. With 1966, I am about 90% complete and hope to complete the set in a few weeks. For older sets, I don't worry so much about condition. I am all about completion and quantity over quality. It saves a bunch of money doing it that way. I try to get my older sets in presentable low to mid grade. My 1970 sets on up are pretty nice, but 1969 on down is starting to get more lower grade. |

That final card...
Just acquired a 1962 Topps #591 "Rookie Parade" card with Sam McDowell to complete my 1962 Topps set. I've assembled the final card I needed to complete each of my Topps sets from 1956 to 1973. I'm still working on 1958 and 1959.

After fighting the urge for a couple of years, I finally gave in and began the 1972 Topps set yesterday by purchasing an 80-card lot for peanuts. I know this journey will be both fun and frustrating. As with other sets, I plan to build a series at a time. Due to the infamous high numbers in this set, I am going to implement an additional strategy of buying 3 or 4 hi's per month to lessen the shock once I get to the last series. I plan to build the set in VG condition so, hopefully, it will be more manageable. Centering is not a huge issue to me as long as the card is approx. 80/20. I am looking forward to this and will update periodically. I would love to hear advice from others that have tackled this monster.

Get high and big
Vault guy,
1972 is my favorite set from my youth, but it's not an easy one to complete. The first 5 series will be simple though, so I wouldn't even worry about those, you can get those any time. The prices aren't going up on mid grade 1972's any time soon unless they are the high numbers. I'd say if you want to do set in series, START with the final series . It's not as easy to find the high numbers in big lots, but that's obviously preferred. I started a second set, and I filled it in no time with the lower series cards. I am stuck now for the second time chasing those psycho high numbers! If I do it again (I am prone to silly acts like building multiple sets ), I would only get high numbers and then fill in the set in reverse! And to reply with an update of my own run 1952 -1980 Topps is down to 25 cards. I exclude the 52 high numbers. I am going to a card show today where I think I can get 5 hits. Whoot!

Good luck with your 72 set Ed....my favorite set from the 70s. Many of the common high #s in VG shape can be on ebay in the $3-4 range.
I understand the pain and frustration collecting the tough high numbers in a set....I am trying to finish my 52 set in PSA 5 or better (minus the 311 which is a 1.5), and I am down to needing 65 high #s and 1 low #. Right now, my budget allows for about 2 common high #s a month, so I have a 2020 target date to complete . |

66 Rub Offs
Mike---what got you started on the Rub Offs ? It has been along time since I worked on my set but somewhere along the line I also ended up with an uncut strip

Al -
My longest uncut strip of 66 Topps rub-offs is only 5 rub-offs long. I got started as I wanted to recapture the fun of building a set card by card, The rub-off set was small enough to complete, seemed available in singles and small lots, not super expensive and was from the heyday of my collecting youth (1965 to 1971). I set a goal of 5 years and $600. I wanted decently centered examples, in excellent condition. It has been fun! As they say on those house renovation shows, I'm slightly over budget and a little past my time deadline. I think they were printed in strips of 20, but I could be wrong. The last 20 I needed seem to be printed in shorter supply. I rarely see them up on Ebay and even fewer in a condition I would like. Thnks for your response. Mike |

Just added #277 Wynn and #9 Hogue in PSA 5 to hit the 210 mark on my 1952T 1-310 run. So an even 100 to go. I usually pick up only 2-3 per month so gonna take me a while yet. And still need 3 HOFers (Mays, Doby, Rizzuto) and Pafko for big names. Lots of work to do!

Snider has a front variant as well, a recurring bottom border irregularity. Not a true variation like the red and black back versions, but it was listed in the Huggins Super Set list. I can send you scan Irv if you want one. Not sure if it shows up in the never ending variations thread, or where it is if it does

I'm a little over 95% complete on the Willie Mays Master Set (297 required items). The list below, once my latest PSA submission comes back, are the remainder needed. The 62 bazooka can be had in a panel and cut up, but ideally don't want to do that. The rest are proving difficult and will require patient. I'm still not convinced the "left side" 68 American Oil exists. If if does, would love to see a picture. If anyone can help on the others, I'd buy or trade for them.

Nothing too exotic, but I am trying to get back to 1961 Topps complete...it was my birth year. Down to town on 1966, a collector grade set, missing the Jackson RC, ugg...probably 25 on 1962 (again collector grade) and about the same on 1961, a nice set. I have found the 1961 highs to be expensive, but not particularly tough to find. I got lucky on the 1967s, finding a collection out of a neighboring town the had a lot of the SPs.

Thanks Larry.
I'm looking for a 62 with full borders, so yea, being a little picky. But I know, as you say, one will come up. It's not too rare. Regarding the American Oil. I've seen plenty of right side, and doubles, but have never seen the left side - that's the "action" side. There have been 49 right side graded, but only 3 left sides. So if someone has one, or has a picture of one, I'd be highly interested in either. And lastly, that's been my approach overall with getting the Mays cards - buy the rarer, harder to come by issues whenever I come across them. I've many upgrades to make among the more common issues.

I realize not postwar, but I am only working on one complete set at this time (although I have many subsets in progress).
My set is the 1939 Playball set. I have been working on this set now for the past 4 years (unfortunately on a budget). With unlimited funds, this really is not a difficult set to put together, but I just cannot throw-down $100/common for the high-numbers. Overall in my set, I am down to only commons; I need 9 commons in the low-number set and 20 commons in the high-numbers. The set is put together with centering key, and condition VG-EX to EX-MT/NM (or PSA/SGC 4 to 6/7). I have approx. half of the set entombed in PSA/SGC including all the HoF/star cards. Beautiful set to look at and the key cards, like Ted and Joe, are just awesome!! 29 more cards........... Dave Last edited by Harford20; 07-31-2017 at 02:53 PM. |

not working on any post-war baseball sets right now.
I do have a good head start on my next set project. Need 3 cards to complete my topps/bowman HOFer run 1948-1980. Maybe I'll start looking for high numbers at a good price and see what year the collecting cosmos dumps into my lap set-building- wise. |
