Default Who bought all the T206 rare backs on eBay??

Anyone notice that in a matter of 2-3 days all of the broafleafs, Carolina brights, graded Lenox etc have been purchased on eBay? Someone trying to corner the market on graded rare-back commons?

Default Which auction?

maybe you can reference which ebay auctions? Unless there is a 1 of 1 , or something unique about it , I'm unsure why anyone would bother with the inflated ebay prices that abound. No offence to anyones auctions , but a Lenox Tinker isnt worth a b.i.n. of $3500 , and too me , in general, theres no need to rush into purchases based on back rarity hype.

Same buyer on many of the cards. Thanks for pointing this phenomenon out.

Does it really matter? David Hall has put a significant hit on the back market due to his absence....The cards being talked about recently on Ebay might total what 10-15? Hall has thousands....

Thank Scot, I figured most were purchased by same buyer. Just seems odd that someone decided to take down in a single shot all the rarer back commons, especially considering they had been sitting out there on eBay for months.

Kevin, I notice that a new generation of David Halls may be out there. As you know, I am a fairly recent buyer of rare backs, and higher end HOF if that. And recently I was outbid on both cy young bare hand OM 6 and a red Cobb CB (with bad paper loss on back), and I had some mighty bids in. Add this random rare back, common grab, and prices realized this spring on other rare backs (see Cobb AB on eBay a month ago), and it seems rare backs may be back and rising.

I don't know Kevin.

These are very interesting sales data points to me -- and all in the last week.

$4400 Broad Leaf 350 PSA 4
$4350 Broad Leaf 350 PSA 3.5
$4200 Black Lenox PSA 4
$2900 Broad Leaf 350 PSA 3
$2875 Carolina Brights SGC 5.5
$2250 Black Lenox SGC 3
$1700 Broad Leaf 350 PSA 2 MK
$1450 Red Hindu SGC 3

How can you be so sure this is not a new master set collector?

Mr. Hall started out this way.

Default Cobb

yes, there was a Cobb CB that went for over 5.8K in early March. I dont feel its worth that, It was low grade. what I saw from the bid history was 2-3 determined bidders have a good go at it. spread from the guy who mantled over it was 4k+ , and the other guy was determined to see where the max was,,, ebay 401284760584

They didn't grab the Brown Old Mill of Ross Helm for $33K yet. (BTW - I find it funny that you'd still have to add the $2.67 shipping on that one)

I don't see it when I search ebay . . . . is it listed there?

If it's a Net54-only listing the new mystery buyer probably hasn't seen it because he doesn't know about Net54 yet. He's only got 125 ebay feedbacks . . . .

He decided to sell his collection, but hasn't begun doing that in a 6 month time frame(rumor started around the time of the national last year) and no one can tell you who will sell it, or when, or anything other than the fact that he said he will.

Additionally, there have been rumblings from various people that have done deals with him for particular rare backed cards. More than one. I strongly suspect that was done to shake up the market. I could be wrong, but I am a gambling man. If I am correct, it would be a pretty smart move. If you thought everyone was taking advantage you when you purchase something, wouldn't you want to mix it up and bring prices down if you are buying?

I have sold him many cards, either thru me or thru another party. I was told by all quite a while back that he was on hold from buying T206s....His interests were in other aspects of business...

Pete, No, but very close to being complete. I have been told by numerous people, including him by email, that he was on hold from aggressively pursuing T206s....

He is a huge collector, has almost a master set. Have you ever heard of a whale? He has one of the greatest T206 collections ever assembled. So I've heard.

Oddly, a whole new batch of rare backs are on Ebay today, including a few broadleafs, some CBs, and an expensive Tinker Lenox (not to mention a very nice looking Willis Brown Hindu, but may be a couple days old). Seems like opportunistic sellers are hoping to lure in our new rare-back hoarder!! Happy fishing.

Many different sellers as well, not just one or two...Looks like rare backs are hot once again.

With people asking this much for BL 350's, makes you wonder how much they'd ask for a BL 460...

I'm pretty sure this is the first time a Broad Leaf ever popped up in one of my saved searches. I can't afford them, but it's nice to see the rare backs.

What's this?

I have an Old Mill Helm, but I certainly did not pay that much for it.

When buying a rare back I would prefer the entire back be present. After all you are only paying for the back. I hate paper loss in general. If I were limited on funds and had to buy a scarce back with paper loss I would rather have the paper loss on the front.

Default The third perspective

Some collect fronts, some collect backs, but I may be the only T206 collector who collects sides. They are simply fascinating.

Default rare backs

It does seem surprising that all the rare backs would we purchased at those ebay asking prices. Several of those cards are fresh out of National auctions with asking prices significantly higher then what they were just sold for which suggest a newer buyer that doesn't follow all the auction houses. An interesting point here is that just a few months back there was a post in the bst trade for a Cassidy with a Broad Leaf 350 back in a PSA 5. It looked fantastic and if anything undergraded for a 5. No one responded and the seller bumped it a few times . Ultimately I bought the card for just over 2k and some trade material. It was graded long ago so I sent it back to PSA who actually gave it a half grade bump. I felt I was paying up but not compared to this mass purchase on ebay. It only takes one person with the funds and a hair trigger to snag a bunch of great cards regardless of the price

The market is not quite as thin for Goudey cards.

Ok. You should sell your cards to this unknown person then, since the prices are going to plummet.

?? Really? Yes, let me do that...Why wouldn't I be a buyer if prices are going to plummet?? Also, what unknown person are you referring to?
