Default T206 cards with "clipped" corners

Some of the best looking cards in my low grade collection, include cards with "clipped" corners. Why were the corners "clipped"?

I don't know of the specific collection, but oftentimes they were put in scrap books with those little black corner holder. When they were tough to get out or stuck to the corners, they would just clip the corner. About 30 years ago at one of the first shows I set up at a man brought in a tin full of 52 Topps including Mantle, Mays, Mathews, Pafko, etc all clipped on the corners.
