Default Signed T206 Marquards

I'm trying to identify all of the signed T206 Marquards out there in hobbyland. If you have one that is not featured here (or if you have a scan of one that is not here) can you please send it my way, or post it here? I will add it to the composite in this post and update the thread.

Also please check out my thread on the number of signed T206 Doyles and Snodgrasses in existence here:

SNODGRASSES

Thanks!

While I have owned many of them at one time or another, I only own one of each pose currently.

I know very little about autographs, but to me it looks like there is a huge amount of variability among those signatures. Is this because he signed over the course of a long life?

I have a throwing. It was in the shop when my dad closed it down. Now it's buried in storage somewhere. I'm planning an expedition to unearth stuff from storage. I'll post as soon as I find it.

There are maybe 3 or 4 different Marquard styles, which you can probably attribute to the fact that he lived until 1980 and signed these cards for 60+ years!

I was guessing the variability was probably due to that in this case. Has anyone ever been able to date each of the signature types using anecdotal evidence, type of pen, etc?

Not to my knowledge. Sounds like a good idea, however. Most of the signatures you see are post-publication of The Glory of Their Times in the mid-1960s.

It appears, he signed many T206 cards, I assume he has the most known signed examples of any player? How does that effect value?

I also see a lot of variance across all examples. I question the authenticity of some, as they look like they were signed by different hands. I get the age factor, but I see different slants, styles, etc.

The only one that really shows different traits is this one, the rest are pretty consistent with how he signed over the course of time. I have been working on a small personal research project for a few months, and am now fairly certain that Rube's wife was signing for him for a very short period of time towards the end of his career, which previously hasn't been a concern. When I am finished with it I will eventually post a signature study on my site and the autograph section so that others can weigh in as well.

Except it didn't! The one in Goodwin this week went for nearly $3,000, and I didn't even bid! I am fairly certain this is the highest price public or private for the sale of a signed Marquard T206. Given the abundance of signed Marqurds at auction, this can probably be explained by the beautiful condition of card and signature.

I missed that one - I was referring to the Hunt one that was in the same auction as a signed T206 Crawford.

Yes, that's a beautiful card.

Ol' Rube must have been having a tough day...got a little confused and signed it twice! Or maybe he wanted this one to be twice as valuable...

In all seriousness, it looks like someone tried to forge his signature, failed, and then tried again. I bought this one on ebay with no expectation of it being an authentic signature; I just needed it for my collection and the price was right (i.e., cheap).

It is an authentic T206 at least. Back is Sov 150 with some paper loss. For me, the "signature(s)" just add character.

Now that is a riot! I wonder what the letter to him was like....was it Dr. Steen?

Dear Marquard,

I have followed your storied career and am insisting upon 15 signed cards,

Sincerely,

Steen

It would fit into my collection perfectly, for sure. The problem is one of valuation. Even if Jeff was interested in selling or trading it, Marquard signed index cards are a dime a dozen. I'm certain I couldn't offer anything close to what it's worth to him.

Yeah, there are 31 signed index cards of Marquard on ebay now, starting at $19.99. This beauty can be had for $29.99:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RUBE-MARQUAR...item4d02c9c556

The question is really how much does that amazing inscription add to the value of an otherwise $30 autographed index card? At that point you're paying for content more than signature. The value of content is extremely subjective.

When I bought this Snodgrass collection, the letter wasn't much more than a throw-in. But, because of the content, and reference to a signed "Cigarette Photo card", it is more or less priceless to me. That's my subjective value.

Sorry for the bad scan...and it's not a signed T206 card, but another Snodgrass letter. Great baseball content here. Got this piece from Sir Jay Wolt.

Yes, I think that is quite the possibility. But, when you line it up with a stack of signed Marquard T206s the tobacco card inference is inescapable.

I think I just cheated on my wife from just thinking about a stack of signed Marquard T206 cards.

Too much info?

Just found this Marquard card in a box I haven't checked in years. It's not a T206, but I thought this thread would be a good place to ask if you think it's his signature, or his name written by someone else? (sorry -- I can't get the signature photo right side up!)

Looks good to me. Not sure why the card was cut up after Rube signed it.

Yes, that makes no sense, another reason why I thought maybe it wasn't a real signature. I guess I now have two signed Marquard cards!

Small world Sean! Do you recall if I bought this card directly from you? (I have no memory of where it came from)
