Indeed. This is what I found from the San Francisco Call, Volume 105, Number 155, 4 May 1909:
"Hal Chase's return to first base after a siege of smallpox was signalized today by the presentation to him of a silver loving cup by his teammates and a 9 to 6 victory over Philadelphia." What a great story. You learn something new everyday.

T206society.com Trivia Giveaway
Alright ya' little punks, it is that time again!
For net54 members aged 25 and under (veteran collectors, PLEASE, no hints!!!), we would like to offer the below Ed Reulbach card as well as a T206 Society polo shirt (if you have not already won one), free of charge, to the first person who can publicly and correctly answer the following trivia question: The Chicago Cubs were an absolute power house in the early 1900's and were aided greatly by Mr. Reulbach, including a one-hitter against cross town rivals the Chicago White Sox in the 1906 World Series. The Cubs would go on to win back to back World Series Cahmpionships in 1907 and 1908. However, they lost a very key part of their club in veteran catcher Johnny Kling to rather unique circumstances for the 1909 season, and have not won a World Series since. Why did Johnny Kling leave the Cubs for the 1909 season? Best of Luck! Derek Last edited by DerekMichael; 12-22-2013 at 01:17 PM. Reason: ... |

He left the Cubs for the entire 1909 season to compete against Charles "Cowboy" Weston during the worlds championship of pool, which he won.
