Default 1930 Rogers Peet

How hard are these cards to collect? The Rogers Hornsby on eBay and the Ty Cobb in the Mastronet Classic Collector auction are the first ones I have seen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Will

Will -
I am far from an expert in this category, but i've seen a couple of these available the each of the past few months. Some nice examples, some not great. Hope that helps, and i'm sure someone on here knows more about it than i do.

I have watched them since I got back into collecting about 8 years ago. They have been very scarce in that time frame. They have a little less interest than some other sets as they are a multi-sport set, are extremely difficult if not impossible to complete (I've never heard of a complete baseball or full set), and are a little newer than some on this board collect. They do have some unique poses and great looking, imo. They are on very thin stock too...I picked up a few Cobbs still in their glassine envelopes not too long ago from an estate of someone that worked at Rogers Peet (a clothing company).....regards

IN RESPONSE TO THE POST ABOUT THE COMPLETE ALBUM WHICH SOLD FOR $6700 OR SOMETHING NEAR THERE , I SPOKE WITH THE SELLER FROM SPORTS CARDS PLUS AND HE TOLD ME THE CARDS WERE IN ABOUT EX AND WERE NEATLY GLUED INTO THE ALBUM. THE PRICE AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED IS A STEAL! GOOD LUCK FINDING THE ALBUM. I HAVE 13 OF THE CARDS FROM THE SET AND 17 TOTAL. GETTING THEM IS LIKE PULLING TEETH. IT'S A SET THAT DOESN'T GENERATE A LOT OF INTEREST OTHER THAN THE BASEBALL STARS. UNKNOWN UNTIL THE 80'S I THINK, THE CATLOGUE DOESN'T HAVE A COMPLETE LIST. THERE ARE SEVERAL UNKNOWNS.MOST ARE TRACK STARS. I HAVE THE COMPLETE LIST FROM THE PERSON WHO PURCHASED THE ALBUM. HE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO GIVE ME THE INFO. I WOULD BE SURPRISED IF ANYONE ELSE HAS PUT THIS SET TOGETHER.THERE WAS A COLLECTOR OUT OF MINNESOTA THAT HAD 27 I THINK .IF YOU WANT A CHALLENGE ,GO FOR IT. YOU MAY WANT TO TYPE CARD COLLECT THIS ONE.
BEST REGARDS, JAMES MCALISTER

These are very tough to find. I've seen about 6 in the last 10 years and bought this one. It actually looks better than the scan would imply.

When I was in New York in 1999 I saw an older building with a huge Rogers Peet paint-on-brick sign in midtown Manhattan.

I found these two as part of a group of items (along with a 1957 World Series ticket and a Charles Lindbergh Rogers Peet card) in the 1980s for less than $15:

Interesting to note that Cobb is shown as a member of the A's -- the team with whom he ended his career in 1928 after Landis cleared him and Speaker of fixing games and betting on them.

The Ruth card shows Babe in a uniform style that was last worn by the Yankees not in the 1930s, but in 1921. According to Mark Okkonen's Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century (1993, First Paperback Edition), the Yanks wore multicolored socks from 1919 to 1921.

Coupled with the fact that Walter Johnson (another player in the set) retired in 1927 (as well as with Cobb's aforementioned 1928 retirement), one wonders why this set was assigned to the 1930s and not earlier?

By the way, here's the 1957 ticket stub and a Rogers Peet envelope that also came with the cards:

The only bad part of this find was I actually had 2 Ruths and sold one for $15 or $18 as part of a deal in the 80s, before anyone knew what these things were!
