Not being ghoulish, but the memorial stripe was what sold me. Not crazy about the "B" written on the cap or paper loss at neck.

Was a bit surprised at the final price as well, given the condition of that WG1 playing card. Makes you wonder where it would have ended up if the card was all there. Still a very tough and extremely rare issue you never seem to find for sale/auction. |

Some nice additions to my RVA pre war collection. Nice to add these too next to the old mill versions that I already have.

For those who study Old Judge cards closely, a run of Fa, Fb, and Fc Detroits courtesy the February Heritage auctions (outside of my small pick-up an impressive grouping of OJs not often seen). These Fa & Fb Detroits are 1888 re-issues of 1887 zero numbered cards. While these re-issues are rarely seen they don't seem to command much of a premium as few collect all variations and are happy with the 1887 initial issue. Most Fb Detroits are new poses of new players, but Goodwin also re-issued most if not all the 1887 cards in 1888 as either Fa or Fb.
The Fa cards typically added first and middle initial (L. G. Twitchell in this case) and the Fa type was source of many misspellings (such as Ganzel becoming Gauzel, Weidman becoming G. E. Weichman, etc.). The Fb card is Ganzel and was a new add to Carto listing for me (hadn't been studied or recorded previously). These re-issues of existing poses haven't been catalogued with same vigor although this would be first example I've seen in decades of close watching. The Fc card is of Campau which was introduced to N172 set in 1888 with Kansas City and re-issued in 1889 with Detroit. Happy to add this image upgrade of Campau.

This is a high level explanation of 1888-1890, a bit more complicated for 1886-1887. The Old Judge book is a great resource to understand how the set evolved year to year.

Nice cards, Joe. I think I was bidding on the Campau. Hopefully a KC version will turn up soon.
I traded away a John Ewing for another n172 and was able to replace it in the run of Heritage auctions with this lesser, but still nice example.

Glad to have finally added an N172 of Charlie Ganzel (thanks, Jay! ).
Ganzel remained in the Boston area after his retirement from the Beaneaters in 1897. He remained very close to the game in various ways: playing for several local semipro teams, umpiring, and coaching the baseball team of my alma mater, Williams College. He guided the team to a couple of championships around the turn of the 20th Century. Somewhat oddly, he appears in two of the college team yearbook photos in two versions of his old Boston uniform. |

I just picked up another w516-1 Becker Prize Back card and I'm very excited about it. It's another dupe for me, but I pick these up whenever I see them at a fair price. I love these things.

Nice, Andy! Are you coming to the National this year? I'll bring mine if you are and we'll see if we can fit any together.

George Gibson E270-2 Colgan's Chips Tin Top
Excited to add this new "type" to my collection today.
Not only is it my first E270-2 Tin Top, but it also completes my run of George Gibson in the Colgan Chips as I had already had his E254 Star of the Diamond and E270-1 Red Border Colgan's Chips. It was part of the Skydash Collection. Thanks to Scott Brockelman and Brockelman Auctions! Patrick Last edited by Vintagecatcher; 03-28-2023 at 07:08 PM. |

I can't make the National in Chicago this year unfortunately. It's just too far away from me. I would need to bring my family with me as a vacation for them while I'm at the show and four plane tickets is just too much for me right now. Plus a rental car and hotel for a few days. I'd have nothing for the show after all that. I'd like to meet up sometime though and put them all together and see if we can make a partial strip by matching them all up. That would be awesome! I'm still looking for a Peckinpaugh for my set, but still have yet to even see one. Good to hear from you man. .

Always good to see reports on actual PSA grading times so I will add here that it took three full months to get this M101-2 done, oversized and basic service. Not shipped yet but three months to report on grading. Still, a happy ending, as this is one of the great images ever, I believe, and PSA is incredibly tough in grading these--of 170 graded a handful of "3s" are still the highest. This Griffith got an unexpected 2.5, easily highest graded, so I am very pleased....
https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1680115016 Plus this almost equally unusual and arresting Ed Walsh pulled a PSA 2, again highest graded. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1680115645 Last edited by GregMitch34; 03-29-2023 at 12:48 PM. |
