These things just weren't as regulated back then. I wouldn't look too hard for the rationale behind it. If anything, I would guess the manufacturer had some excess burgundy felt inventory to work through.
Or perhaps it was just the color felt that was at arms-length of the screener at the time it was made. Something random like that... Regardless, it's a gorgeous and super-cool GA Tech piece.
