Just a small touch of nightmare fuel from the soulless eyes of a HOF'r. Cubs players really got robbed in this set compared to the amount of detail in many of the other cards.

I have never noticed it before, but when looking for a scan of a mesmerizing card to add to this thread, I came across this Diamond Stars card of Ray Hayworth. Ray is doing his best to keep us from noticing that umpire/player discussion in the background.

Ray Hayworth was such a nice man. The last living Tiger teammate of Ty Cobb, I believe. What's remarkable about Ray's relationship with Cobb is that it was a positive one! Cobb was always nice to him, which goes against what we've been taught about Ty, especially in how it pertained to rookies!

In seriousness these two always suck me in. Campy because it’s a great tribute, Gibson because I get transported to that moment just with a picture.

The Meyers D381 is probably my favorite all time card image! The Matty is my avatar, but love these as well:

The whole set is full of striking unique images. A few others I love as well:

Default My card

I’m on the road right now, so can’t post a pic, but for me the card is the 1953 Topps Satchell Paige card. I could stare at that one all day…

Cheers,
Geno

I believe Franz Mesmer would feel a kinship with the hypnotic power of Sandy's eyes...

With all the airbrushing happening on this card, it initially made me wonder if the touch-up guy at Topps took a bit of liberty with Miller's eyes, but on closer inspection, I don't think so.

I actually found a player who had even more piercing blue eyes than Miller. Sadly, he never had any cards, as he was a one-gamer. The few period photos of him were B&W, so it wasn't until visiting his widow and I saw color snapshots of him as an older man that I realized this.

^^^

My new vote for ugliest card ever. 1943 M.P. & Co. look like pointillist masterpieces by comparison.

As seen in the previously posted 1939 Play Ball, the intense but patently non-evil Charlie Gehringer stare-down has put many a beholder into a trance.
