Default Chantilly Show

Is this show worth traveling to? Any thoughts on the pre war offerings?

Depends on how far you have to travel. If you're in other parts of Virginia or a neighboring state, sure, it's worth a few hour car drive. If you live farther away, not really. It's nowhere near the size of a show like the National.

I'd say the dealers can be broken down into thirds. One third is vintage/pre-war. One third is modern. One third is autographs.

Not a bad show. Taking my ten year old with me again (Sunday). He likes new football cards and I'll look around for some stuff I need and drop off 60+ card submission to SGC.

It's about 4 hours for me and I usually go...probably 2 our of 3 on average. It is not like the national, but IMO it is in the next rung down. On an average show, I spend a couple hundred bucks...technically, it may not be worth going, but I do enjoy meeting other collectors and every once in a great while I trip across something special. If you are working on something like a 1961 Topps set, you will have great luck. I have picked up a couple of ts over the years, but nothing I couldn't have found on the boards.

The autograph guests are very good through are seeming to lack variety. I think it's a simple matter of that they have found something that works for them. I don't really do autos, but i often find someone in the forward area I would like to meet. Claude Osteen was there a couple of shows back and I remember his career pretty fondly and had a nice chat.

It's a good show, though. I would recommend it if you like the whole vibe. But if you are going expecting you will get things for less than you pay off ebay...well, it happens, but not a lot unless you are into junk wax or sets.

The Chantilly show is very heavy on autographs and autograph dealers. Many, if not all of the vintage card dealers have stopped setting up at this show. There is still some vintage material, just not as much as in the past.

Friday is the best day to go. Admission is free and the real collectors are there on Friday and much of the crowd on Sat & Sun goes for the autograph guests.

The show has within the last year been sold to a group of 5 promoters. Time will tell to see if the show will be any different (more autograph guests, more shiny stuff, etc,...) than it had been with the old promoter.

+1

I normally take off work early and get there around 2-3pm, but not all dealers are set up by then. I think this year I'll go later Friday and maybe on the weekend.
