1934 Detroit Pennant Winners 1934 - Large Premium Card
I have probably asked about this type card before but don't remember the answer, if I did. In adding this to my collection site, I am classifying it as H-Unc. It measures approx. 9 1/4 x 6 3/4, is on heavy card stock and the back is blank. It doesn't appear to be trimmed but it could be, I guess. This photo was put out by Illustrated Current News, in Sept of 1934, and it said "Probable" Pennant Winners. I am wondering if it should be a M-Unc, for magazine type?

I've not seen one of those before, nor do I recall seeing that photo. Some of the players aren't wearing sleeves, I'm guessing it's from early in the 1934 season.
In that photo image, Cy Perkins is sitting next to player manager Cochrane. Cy was a coach that year, because Cochrane wanted his assistance. Perkins was a catcher, as was Cochrane (although surely everyone here would know that)... Perkins was done playing as the 1931 season ended, he was with the Yankees. But Cochrane puts him in for one last at bat. Starting pitcher Tommy Bridges left the game after 4 innings, ahead 4-0, he got the win that day, his 22nd, different rules back then. Cy Perkins pinch hit; and grounded out 5-3. Three years after what he thought was his last at bat, he found himself batting again. That may well be Perkins' last "card." |

Hi Frank
Thanks for the thoughts. I think the Tigers won the series in 1935, and St. Louis in 1934. So, I would think this card would probably have to have been made in later 1935, since it says Pennant Winners? Unless, of course, this was an error, or maybe they meant the League Pennant Winners? ... Quote:

I think this is 1934 AL Pennant Winners, otherwise would say 1935 WS winners.

Joe's thoughts are in line with mine, as to the distinction between World's Champions vs Pennant Winner. Winning the league made you a Pennant Winner. The two Pennant winners meet in the World Series to decide the World Championship. I think that item, no matter when it was printed and distributed, is about the 1934 team.
Luke Hamlin pitched for the 1934 Tigers. He was not in the majors in 1935; he was in AA Milwaukee the entire season. AND, I think that Willis in the top row, second from left is Icehouse Wilson. George Wilson played only one season in professional baseball, 1934; only 1 major league at bat. Last edited by FrankWakefield; 04-28-2024 at 12:02 PM. Reason: adding Icehouse Wilson line. |

It's 1934 for sure, sir. They lost to the Cardinals in the WS, and basically the same team beat the Cubs in 1935. While not identical text font, I have what would seem to be the same photo in one of my old scrapbooks.
