Default The ultimate trade up

Scroll to the bottom of this post to track the progress in real time.

Ok so I am going to try something out.

I am attempting to trade up to a 52 Topps Mantle by years end.

I always watched that show and wanted to try it out, and after trading at the Hofstra show the other day it gave me this idea.

I am offering this beautiful T-205 WOJO graded SGC 40. Beautiful card.

I will take the best trade offered to me.

Obviously the WOJO is a easy sell, for whoever gets it. Let's make a deal and watch me get this MANTLE!

This thread would generally go in the BST section. Since it's kind of different let's let it be here this time. If anyone doesn't like it please contact management for a full refund of your membership dues . Please though, this isn't an open invitation to sell on the front page. You will be beaten severely, above the neck, with a wet noodle if you do. Good luck in the Trade-Up!! (And if this thing gets out of hand it can easily be moved at any time.)

This requires other people to trade down and lose value. I don't like losing money. Maybe there are others that don't mind or don't have an eye on it.

I am curious to see where this goes.

I am not asking for anything in particular. Yes someone would lose value, but a Wojo is a lot easier move for someone than a card they have been trying to move for a year of a high grade nobody etc.

Even if someone would rather have a Wojo than what they currently have and not want to spend the money to get one.

I am not picky so I will take basically anything worth more

This goal will be tough to achieve making trades with people on Net54.

It would be easier if you did away with the 1:1 idea. You should trade one card for groups of cards and try to spread out some profit. Nobody is willing to take a hit on one card, but someone might not mind losing $ on a group of unimportant cards if they are getting one great card in return.

I remember a few years ago someone on the CU board did a similar thing. I don't recall exactly how far they got, but I believe they made a pretty good attempt. The key I think would be to not limit what you'll take and to be open to any type of offer. I think as you get further along it will get more difficult, but in the end, I think you might be surprised. Besides, that's a nice Johnson to start from!

Stephen - I have to disagree with the boss man on this one...IMO, it belongs on BST...after all, the 'T' stands for trade.

I highly doubt this thread will last long and I agree that it does not belong in the BST section with comments bumping it over people actually trying to sell and trade items.

Then I stand corrected. Good luck. At this point I just keep checking back to see if anyone is willing to do this.

I understand the trading up, but I don't think I have ever seen someone be so blatant about wanting to rip someone off before.

Congrats on the trade. You offered me the SGC 40 T205 Johnson ($500 card) for my SGC 70 T206 Dahlen Brooklyn ($1000-1200 card). I don't know why I did not pull the trigger.....My loss

I'd like to disagree on your $500 appraisal of my Johnson. It's a $700 card and someone else thinks so too obviously. and that Dahlen isn't a very easy sell.

You can't go from a $500 or $700 card to a 52 mantle without making a few favorable trades along the way.

Good stuff, everyone. Always found vintage photo collecting interesting as the ignoramus that I am. Never realized it was such a robust market before reading about it on here. I always just assumed the money was in negatives but not necessarily in the actual developed prints which theoretically could have been struck limitlessly. Guess it's like anything else with scarcity and demand.

Stephen, I would suggest also posting your wares in the BST for those who may not be following this project specifically and may be interested in acquiring what you've got.

you should post about this in the autograph, memorabilia, postwar section and water cooler sections too. Never know where a trade might start from.

May I suggest that offering the wares primarily happens in the BST (especially for the stuff that is not new) and this thread is only updated when a trade or sale happens, and maybe only as a weekly update?

Not a bad idea. I'll try doing that and keep this to only new items.

My 2 cents- I personally would have no problem trading a few cards with higher value for 1 or 2 cards that I wanted more. ie, if someone offered me a nice centered Mantle card that is worth $1000 for a Warren Spahn, Gil Hodges, and Duke Snider that total $1100, I would take it. I'd personally rather have the centered Mantle, and I wouldn't feel like I got scammed or gave to charity.

Thats a sweat equity situation. I dont think anyone has a problem with that. Its more of the 1 for 1 deals with a 25% rip, like the transaction that went awry which people feel brings unrealistic expectations and problem transactions..which already occurred..

Bulk for 1 card is a timeless way to earn sweat equity. I have rarely seen anyone on net54 say...I want 10 cards for my 1 card. Its always, i have these 5 cards and i want 1 card for it...type of deal....the value is having the value in 1 card, not in 10...and its worth something to downsize and let the other person do the sweat equity to get the waterfront property...

I've now made my 3rd and 4th trade/sale with Stephen (Cy Young and Chief Bender T206) and I've been happy every single time. I got rid of a few things that I no longer needed and received 4 T206s that I needed to complete my set. I had zero problem giving up (real life example) $233 in trade for a $200 card that I needed. And every single transaction (after some major bartering via text!) went as smoothly as can be.

After all this, what is left to flip?

I agree that trading one for one would be easier to follow, and likely make a more interesting read. But perhaps I am a just another grumpy old guy who can only track one thing at a time.

In any case, as someone that does not own a '52 Topps Mantle, I watch with intrigue as to whether he can do it, and a touch of envy if he does achieve his goal.

One thing for sure, I won't be around in 2071 if that ends up being the final date.

I'm a grumpy old man- well, only 64 but unquestionably grouchy, but I do have a couple of observations to share.

I don't know Stephen but he seems like a genuinely good guy and I appreciate his enthusiasm for the hobby. But I'm not sure he's getting any closer to his goal. He trades commons for HOfers, then trades HOFers for more commons, and I don't know if that will ever get him a 52 Mantle. Plus, with the price of the card increasing dramatically, I don't even think he is keeping up with inflation. For every $100 score he makes, the 52 Mantle becomes $200 more expensive.

Also, why is this on the main page? At the end of the day, Stephen is just a guy trying to add a great card to his collection. Isn't that what everyone is trying to do? If I'm saving up to buy a Wagner, but need to sell a lot of cards to afford it, can I do so on the main page? Seems like this is a BST issue.

Anyway, sorry to be so grumpy. Just my three cents.

Hey Barry,
You misspelled (typo) enthusiasm.
The questions you raise were answered long ago in this thread. It is on the front page because the original poster (hey Stephen) asked if it could be and was told it was ok. It is a vintage card experiment that has some entertainment value. It is one thread on the front page out of 35. There is no harm in it and most likely other threads like it wouldn't be allowed again, at least very soon. It's baseball cards....We should be happy for Stephen to give it a try (hey Stephen) even though I have to agree, he has a big time uphill battle. I still think he ends up with some '87 Donruss...

Not sure what all the fuss is all about. Love the concept and keep waiting for you to get some things I collect so I can get in on the fun.

Look folks. This is a hobby. No one is getting hurt. Stephen has been clear about his goals from his very first post. There is enough garbage going on in the "real world" that we don't need to bring that stuff in to what I'm thinking most of us consider our safe haven. Cut the guy some slack and remember the old adage...treat others the way you want to be treated. We're all big boys here and we don't have to like each other...but a little respect goes a long way. Good luck to all in their collecting endeavors whatever they may be...M@tt McC@rthy

As one of the participants in this trade-up endeavor (I got the Ruth for all those T206s), I really enjoy watching the progress. I imagine that you're at least 1/2-way there, Stephen.

Thanks!

Anyone in the mode for a 1954 Bowman set? It's looking for a new home. Let's make a trade. See photos on post #401-#404
