Show your Tobacco, Candy, Gum, Bread, etc. advertisement pieces
Circa 1910-1915
It was taboo to depict American women smoking in the early part of the 20th Century. So, ATC produced this subliminal advertisement showing a gal of middle-Eastern appearance and dress with a pack of cigarettes. Furthermore, the effect of the repeated (diminishing) image was a clever advertising feature which was novel in that era. TED Z . Last edited by tedzan; 09-29-2016 at 08:44 AM. There's not much in the way of Philadelphia Caramel advertisements.
This ad was featured in the May 1910 issue of the Confectioners Journal. ErikV |

While a neat item I don’t believe those Turkish Trophies items were ever issued with baseball subjects and are later fantasy creations made by dealers or collectors put on non-sports displays. I have never seen one with baseball players that looks right.
In the above example you can clearly see where another leather was removed and a different shaped leather was put in its place, also the T3 replaced Hamilton King girl cabinets and most likely the S81 was added to replace a flag silk. I’ve had a few long discussions with long time hobby dealers and all have agreed or said the same thing…that these are most likely not original period as issued items. These are obviously more modern but I think they are fun nonetheless. When I purchased the Stengel Durocher die cut counter display I was told that it was issued to store owners in New York in the fall of 1951. The Fernando item was produced in Mexico in 1981. I miss Fernando. Although I am always proud of my roots, being a Mexican American was especially meaningful that summer.

Nice lithography on those, Tony. They look great.
Here is a cigar box I picked up quite some time back but don't think I had shown it. Not sure as this thread has taken on a life of its own.

Show your Tobacco, Candy, Gum, etc. advertisement pieces
Some really great advertising stuff in this thread; and, especially some beautiful El Principe de Gales adv. I'll follow these with 10 of my EPDG T206's. Furthermore, I've wondered why this T-brand was not carried over to subsequent issues (T205, T207, etc.) ? Does anyone on this forum have any idea(s) why this is ? ? I'd really love to hear them. .. Quote:
Once George became king on May 6, 1910 the pun and imagery lost a bit. Especially since the title is not hereditary and the eventual Edward VIII didn't become prince of Wales until 23 June 1911. He also wasn't as popular as George, and much thinner. So holding over a brand based on a pun that no longer made any sense also made little sense. Just a theory of course. Steve B |

Quote:
El Principe de Gales was the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII. He was granted the title in 1841 as heir apparent to Queen Victoria, and did not become King until 1901. He was known internationally as the Playboy Prince, and the perfect representative for a cigar brand since he was also known to be a heavy smoker. The brand name El Principe de Gales had been in use since the 1850's, pre-dating the future King George V who did not become Prince of Wales until 1901. Upon King Edward's death in 1910, King George assumed the throne, and the brand name most likely lost its meaning as you theorized.

I had a quick look at some stamp series, and the Canadian stamps of Georges reign are called the admirals, mostly because the depict him in his admiral of the fleet uniform, a theme that turns up in the ads. So the transition was probably an easy one. Both Edward and George were admiral of the navy, a largely ceremonial title that could be held by more than one person, and was occasionally held by a foreign leader like Czar Nicholas. And of the royal family the only one holding the title without having naval service was Edward VII - Something I didn't know before looking it up. This stuff can be a lot of fun, and not just for learning about baseball Steve B |

Steve, I have seen a few differing version. Some are one panel (trimmed?), some similar to mine and others have four RC cross logos in red on the back. My example is missing the fine print on the front image, as seen on yours. Great item nonetheless.

Where do you find values on advertisement pieces? I just purchased an Old Judge advertisement and was curious if I got a good deal on it.
