Biggio has two cards from 1988, how is a 1989 card his rookie? I thought that Beckett XRC nonsense had been rejected by most people.

I would agree... Maybe because while he played in the 88 season it was only 50 games and he wasnt an official MLB rookie until the 89 season? I'm jsut spitballing.

Here's the PSA Registry Set:

CRAIG BIGGIO ROOKIE SET

Issue Card# Weight
1988 FLEER UPDATE CRAIG BIGGIO U-89 3.00
1988 SCORE ROOKIE TRADED CRAIG BIGGIO 103T 5.00
1989 DONRUSS CRAIG BIGGIO 561 2.00
1989 FLEER CRAIG BIGGIO 353 1.00
1989 SCORE CRAIG BIGGIO 237 2.00
1989 TOPPS CRAIG BIGGIO 49 2.00
1989 UPPER DECK CRAIG BIGGIO 273 3.00

I think it's the Beckett designation of traded and update sets as XRCs -- the fiction is that only cards that were available in packs are real rookies so if the only cards from a particular year were in traded or update sets, those are "XRCs" like the Score Traded and Fleer Update Biggios and the next year's cards are RCs. I think it's ridiculous, and I believe nobody follows it any more. To me the 1989 Biggios are second year cards. Sorry to hijack your thread.

Another spitball...

The 88 cards were both late-season Traded sets, not regular issues. Kind of like the 84 Fleer Update Puckett is a rookie card, but also the 85 Topps, Fleer, and and Donruss are considered rookie cards as well (by PSA and collectors). Same goes for Clemens. Cal Ripken has two Topps rookie cards. In the same manner, the 82 Topps Traded should then not be counted as a rookie as it was a late season set.

87 Bonds are considered rookies for the same reason even though he had 3 86 cards. I think Strawberry has an 83 XRC and later rookies. I am sure there are more examples. I think they eventually got rid of it -- for example Nomar had only a 92 Topps Traded but I think it's got a straight RC designation -- so that other nonsense should have been wiped out retroactively.
