Default Mantle Jersey on Ebay $20,000+

Anyone here in on the bidding?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160888199299

It says PSA, but shows no letter or mention of it in the description.

Is it legit?

What's it gonna go for?

I bet it doesn't reach the reserve....just a hunch.

I don't think PSA does letters for game used jerseys.

So what does the PSA in the title mean?

I find it a tad odd that in the description it says "ON THE BACK OF THE JERSEY IS ALSO A VINTAGE BOLD # 7 WHICH BACK THEN WAS PLACED OVER A ANOTHER NUMBER.

ummmm, red flag.

Wouldn't ya think that by 1966 Mickey had kinda sorta established himself, and that he was worthy of his own jersey and not get someone elses and they change the number to 7.

The seller: Thegoodz15, out of Florida mind u, makes this claim as well:

"WE HAVE HANDLED MORE MICKEY MANTLE GAME USED ITEMS THEN ANY AUCTION COMPANY OR PERSON PERIOD SINCE 1984"

Yet when I search their approx 1000 feedbacks left for them over the years, there is not 1 Mantle Game Used item......except a baseball card that is one of those game used pieces, that their are about 150 or so on Ebay for Mantle.

So not sure how they are making that claim. Red flag 2.

I am not a jersey guy but that auction has more red flags than a Roaches Corner auction. And I think the "PSA" in the title and description is just lowly keyword Spamming. It doesn't say there is any LOA or COA. Whomever buys this will get exactly what they deserve, imo. It could be real but I would be very uncomfortable buying it with only what I see there.

The seller is a big time dealer/collector. Plus the other number on the back is probably because it was sent down to the minors and reissued to someone else, then at a later time someone must have restored the 7.

Do you think the jersey is legitimate?

If it is bogus, the seller is shooting for the moon. $20,100.00 is the bid and the reserve is still not met.

PSA only authenticates game used bats. As already note, the PSA is probably just keyword spamming.

I do not know if it is good or bad, and if the dealer sells good items, that's not shocking, nor would it be that he has 1 or 2 bad items, that he may or may not be aware of.

I just don't see why he hides the provenance. Along with the other issues I've pointed out. Could very well be good, but I 'd think he'd get more at a big auction house then Ebay for that type of item.

Of course maybe that's where it's headed if it doesn't met reserve.

Still seems fishy,

Thanks for the clarification and information Scott. It was fantastic speaking with you on the phone too. It is always great to speak with another hobbyist as addicted as myself. Sorry I doubted the auction whatsoever but that is the skeptical part of me coming out. Take care and happy collecting....and thanks again for the great phone call. LL

Mr. Goodman, I'd love an opportunity to visit your collection if it's a store front. I'm located by Homestead myself.

Thanks for responding either way, this is a interesting thread to follow.

Default Mantle Jersey

Hello Scott!
I will concur on all his points, and also say that I was the under bidder on a Casey Stengel jersey that was sent down to the ST Pete club . Still had his name in it, but # had been replaced and Yankee logo had been replaced, but it was indeed a Stengel worn jersey that was then sent to minors at end of season.
Good luck with the sale Scott

I'm curious about who the player was? Because the jersey was sent down to the minors for use in 1967 and maybe longer then that. So what the player who played with Mantle tracked this jersey down then?

it was funny Brock; someone i knew forwarded me that stengel info, knowing i have a place in clearwater. So I flew down to see it in person, saw it was real, and attended the auction in person, bringing cash, figured 'no one knows about this piss ant little local estate auction house, I'm gonna steal this.' And of course the item was on Live auctioneers, and there were tons of phone bidders

Surprised at the low price the 1954 Stengel home jersey brought, only about 4500.

I was willing to pay max of $4000. Figured with the restoration work required that was about the top I could go. went for $4750 plus another 18% premium
here is info on it. I saw it on person, it was 1000% good, but with the restoration needed AND the condition it was in, i had to stay firm at $4k (and that included commision)....and i just stood up and walked out of the room when i was topped.
CASEY STENGEL GAME USED BASEBALL JERSEY: Spalding New York Yankees pinstripe jersey circa 1955-1960 with C. Stengel and 37 stitched into lower section of jersey. In the 1950's the Yankees would send their old uniforms down to the farm system when soiled and this jersey was sent to the St. Petersburg Saints and unfortunately the Yankees logo and number 37 have been removed and replaced with Saints logo and number. Traces of the original logo and number can been seen. Reputedly from the Saints clubhouse, given to the consignor as a ball boy in the late 1950's. The Saints were a part of the Yankees organization from 1955-1960. Size 42 shirt.
CONDITION: Expected signs of use and wear, some yellowing, no holes or tears

I'm confused about the travels of the Mantle jersey. if it was sent down to the minors and had its number changed, how did it make it back up to the majors with Mantle's number 7 on it? I've always thought that once jerseys went to the minors, they stayed there.

It didn't make it back up to the majors, someone just restored the number 7.

Scott,
Could you post the history about it? I don't know why when people sell items that have provenance, yet they decide not to list it(not just referring to this item, but have seen other items in the past).

I think Greg means how the player got the jersey after it was sent to the minors, unless the player who played with Mantle in 1966 was sent to the minors in 1967 and used the jersey.

That's not what the description says -- it says the number is vintage and was put on the jersey back then. And if the jersey didn't return to the majors, how did a Mantle teammate get it?

I'm not doubting the jersey -- I just want to figure out the correct sequence of events.

Looks like the Stengel jersey is coming back up for sale. But this time has the number and NY on it. Anyone know how much the restoration work would have cost?

Jersey sold for $4,750 plus the 18% so $5,605 total. What would the restoration cost $1,000?? So we'll say $6,605, if it sells for $9,000 hunts takes 15%(not sure of number). So they would get a check for $7,650 and make a profit of $1,045. Doesn't really seem worth spending all the money for that little of profit.

For just the logo and number on back? My guess would be more like 1/10 of that cost.

I was told by a restorer it would cost $1500 to do the work properly. so they have $7300 into it if done properly.
I would be surprised if it goes in the estimate range, but will be annoyed at myself if it does.

The stengel jersey ended at $8,000. So If my math below was right, the person who bought it earlier probably lost money on it.
