Default O/T- An important update

The pack of doggies rescued 1 yr ago had their 2nd yearly shots yesterday. I am happy to report they are part of our family and have integrated nicely. They even come inside when there is inclimate weather, much to my wifes chagrin....

Dogs are the best.....(other animals are great too!!)

+1. Great work Leon!!

And dogs are the best! We have a one year old Plott Hound named Penny and she is the sweetest dog that I've ever seen. My 12 year old daughter wanted a cat for her birthday, so we begrudgingly obliged. One day with the cat and it bit me on the hand! So I am partial to dogs as well!!

What a beautiful run for the dogs Leon. My wife and I work in dog rescue so appreciate what you do for these guys.

I was skeptical when my wife started bringing home dogs, as I worked in package delivery for years and got bit myself a fair number of times, but the more I am around them, the more I appreciate and understand their behaviors.

They also serve as a security blanket for my wife, who is hearing impaired. We don't ever train our dogs as guard dogs, but just being around they make her feel much safer then she normally would feel, especially when she is alone in the house. One of them is also trained as a service dog for her, when she is out and about on her own. Alerts her to people trying to get her attention or walking up on her.

The few fun looking toys I have bought them, they rarely play with. They have more toys out there than can be seen in the pics. They chew and eat a lot of the regular, white chew bones, on an every day basis. They chew on them all of the time. They play with each other a ton too. That was part of the beauty in them staying together. They are truly a pack and it's neat to see how they play and interact with each other. I give them treats more than once a day. Milkbones often, and it's been a lot of 6" rib bones I get on the bay, in packages of 100 lately. They love them. And I play with them many times each day too. All in all they give me a ton more than I give them (and I give them a lot ).. I also have had to ramp up my attention for our first 2 doggies, one of which is a street rescue who she sleeps under my left arm each night. She's not spoiled though.

Here's my rescue guy. Absolutely the best dog I've ever had (and I've had dogs my whole life).
He is 83 lbs. and sleeps in my Queen size bed with me and my wife every night.

Dog pics are fun...here is my dog Zoe rescued from local shelter after being abused for the first two years of her life...still do not know how anyone can abuse that face (or any dog for that matter!).

That's great Leon! My wife and I have a Westie named Friday that will be 10 in January and have him since he was 8 or 10 weeks old. We named him after Robinson Caruso's side kick. Friday means helper / companion and he has been both in the purest sense. We have been so fortunate. Aside from my wife, he truly has been my best friend, and has no doubt added years to my life.

Murphy is the most gentle dog I could ever want. He was our only 'child' for his first five years, so we were unsure how he would react to bringing a baby into the house. He was incredible and protective of the new baby, even as he grew and would pull his tail, steal his food dish, try to ride him, etc.

Now three years later, his world just got rocked again, with the arrival of a new baby sister. Does he freak out? Nah - he goes into protective big brother mode again.

What more could we ever want?? Murph's the best!

way to go Leon and others!!! - DOGS RULE (and in many cases are better than people)...

haven't had a dog in over a decade as I travel too much and am NOT willing to neglect such magnificent beings (I'd much rather do without if I cannot take care of / offer them the quality time they need / deserve)...

Great dogs everyone. Here is my rescued Carolina Dog, Lucy (aka Dingo aka Dingbat aka Ding-a-ling aka The Juice), the smartest dog I have seen and also great with my son.

The ultimate beach bum....don't tell my wife and daughter this, but when we were trying to come up with a name, I suggested Cooper. They both said "cool!" I didn't tell them the name was the short version of Cooperstown....somehow forgot to mention that.

great job Leon--I have a 15 1/2 yr old maltese and just returned 3 hours ago from a Safari in sSouth Africa ---got within 10 feet or so of elephants, lions, a leopard, about 25 ft from several giraffes and a hyena den etc etc. Animals are so much more civilized than people imho

Default Dog names

My wife and I have been married 24 years, have 4 great kids and have had 5 wonderful dogs. She named the first one, and then I convinced the kids that the next 4 should be named Wrigley, Camden, Ebbets and Fenway. We rescued all the dogs from various agencies, and all have been wonderful (in their own ways). Ebbets and Fenway are still with us. We will never have a Shea or a Busch, but I can see naming a dog Shibe, Comiskey or Forbes. No way on Cingular One, Bank One, Petco, Tropicana or Coors!

Two big thumbs up, Leon, from a fellow animal lover. Since I'm an attorney who is always involved in litigation, I tend to see the very worst in people when there is a lot of money at stake. I often think at those times that rare is the person who can match the character of a good house dog or cat. We had the most wonderful dog, an 80-lb American Staffordshire Terrier, that we had to put to sleep just a couple of months prior to her 15th birthday in 2010. My 40th HS reunion was scheduled for that same evening, already had tickets, but there was no way I could go after that. They are family! As the main character said in the movie, "Marley and Me," a dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, smart or dumb. Just give him all your heart, and he will give you all of his in return!

We now have four cats, two of whom look just like Richard's, and I've found the above to be a truism with them as well. They are all rescue cats, and the youngest, just a year and a half old, will climb up on my chest while I'm watching sports and pump his paws on my chest, and lick my neck and face.
Sometimes I'll just walk by him and he'll lay down, roll over on his back, and expose his belly for a tummy rub, which he seems to dearly love. My wife, who is also an animal lover, will sometimes exclaim in near exasperation, "We have four cats!" I just say "Yes, dear, we are truly blessed with cats."

After we retire, we'll get another dog--probably a female, as they seem to accept cats as part of their pack!

Great post--God will bless you for what you've done!

Larry

Finally got around to get a pic of my dog.
His name is Toby and he is a spanador. Part black lab and cocker spaniel. You can figure he is more spaniel with those ears.

Dogs are truly the best. We have four..........an 11 year old Smooth Fox Terrier, a 10 year old Wheaton Terrier, a 2 or 3 year old Chihuahua, and a 1 to 2 year old Jack Russell mix with Border Collie. This is the Jack Russell Mix after a play session............

Great doggies guys!! They truly are our best friend.

Here is a shot of the original 3 from about 10 minutes ago. They are doing great. They got their 2nd round of monthly/annual heartworm medicine today. They have been parts of our family for around a year and a half now.

My kids foster puppies/kittens from ARF here in Bay Area. We've had dozens of animals over the past few years; kept two of the dogs. Here is what we have now:

those dogs will be going back to ARF in about 9 days if anyone wants one. Our foster pets usually get adopted within 24 hours.

Here is our latest dog Bubba Chuck. We got him from the same humane society that we got our last 2 dogs from. It was definitely a case of him picking me. I did not want a little(-100lbs) dog or a pitbull and I ended up with both. Just look at those eyes, he sad puppy eyed me into taking him home.

These guys got adopted last week. Sometimes it's hard for my kids to let these little critters go. Fostering is a great way to help out without "owning" the pet. ARF was founded by Tony La Russa and is doing amazing work for pets in need here in Bay Area

OMG is that little guy on the left cute. There is no way we could foster as my wife would never let a single one leave our house. John you and your family are doing an amazing thing also.

Most of our pack as of last year. The one on the far right was our very first dog. She passed soon after this picture was taken from congestive heart failure.

The little one next to her has ably taken her spot. Below that she is joking around with our long time foster from a rescue organization (also called ARF, coincidentally). Standing proud with her service gear, and she's also trained to go on the kayak with the wife.

Is this a dog-only thread, or can other pets/family members join in?

I can't comment for anyone else but I say show them if you got them. This is my African Senegal Parrot Mikey.

Great looking pets guys, one and all!!

All animals are welcome in this thread. I could never foster dogs as NONE of them would find other homes because I would have to keep them all. So that isn't a good plan for me. Four out of our five we got straight from the street.....and the fifth one (our first and only one we (will ever) buy) is on her last leg going on about 14-15 yrs old....

Chris- Cool Gecko, just stay away from Tokay's.....they are like reticulated pythons and are always mean. And Tokay's grow big enough to eat mice and small animals. I love reptiles but my wife doesn't so we have dogs . When I was young I volunteered at the Houston Zoo in their reptile dept. At the time the zoo's Curator specialty was reptiles so they had a great reptile dept. (that is what happens with curators specialties)...,
