Guys,

What do you guys think is the top 10 pre-war cards for the collector. I'm not discussing the cards with the most investment potential, I'd like to :hear from collectors, give me your list of the top 10 pre-war. These cards can be ones that you have or would like to have. Here's my list (in no particular order):

A) 1932 U.S. Caramel Fred Lindstrom

B) T207 Buck Weaver

C) T206 Honus Wagner

D) M101-4 Babe Ruth

E) T206 Ed Plank

F) 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53

G) 1914 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson

H) T-3 Turkey Red Vic Willis

I) 1941 Play Ball Pee Wee Reese

J) E90-1 Mike Mitchell

From the above list, do you think there are any cards that you think do not belong.

Peter

Why is the Turkey Red of Willis on this list? Is it more signficant than a Just So of Cy Young, for example?

This is fun:

1914 Baltimore Ruth
1893 Just So Cy Young
W600 Burkett
G&B Al Spaulding
Cabanas Pete Hill
1869 Peck & Snyder Reds
Red Stocking Cigar Radbourn
N142 Delahanty
N173 Ewing & Mascot
E94 Cy Young - violet

If you asked me tomorrow, I might swap the bottom 3 for something else.

Barry,

The Turkey Reds are just a beautiful set and I like Vic Willis because he belongs to the Hall of the Very Good. But Just So is a nice set also.

While there are several on your list that I would take exception to your T207 Weaver selection will be highlighted. The 1911 Zeenut; 1911 d310 Pacific Coast Biscuit; 1911 Obak (regular issue and Premium); and e100 Bishop are all higher on my Weaver list than the T207. In fact all are on my Top 10 list.

The balance of my list is:

1915 Zeenut Williams
1915 Zeenut Risberg
1915 Zeenut McMullin
Any HOF e107
T210 Jackson

No T206 Wagner nor Plank. They are just too common for my taste.

Out of all the HOF T3's, I don't understand the Willis selection either. He's actually one of, if not the least desirable HOFer in the set among collectors.

Cat,

The M101-4 is Babe's recognized Rookie Card, although I do like his pose in the M101-5.

Paul- if you are going to include an N173 I think Connie Mack and Ed Delahanty are the gold standard of Old Judge cabinets.

If I could choose to own only one baseball card it would be the Anson in uniform N172.

I'd want to throw in a Cap Anson in Uniform N172 here, and a Mathewson E107 there....

Barry,

I know the Mack and Delahanty are more valuable, and I was even thinking of listing that incredible N173 Kelly Portrait. But I decided to just list the cards that I subjectively wanted the most, with the idea being I could never sell them. (Otherwise Wagner would be No. 1 -- I'd sell it and buy what I want). I really like the Ewing with Mascot, so I listed that one.

I really did try to make my list independent of card value. The first seven on my list are ultra-pricey, but that's only because a lot of people apparently have the same taste as me.

Edited to add -- I really might like to add the Holsum Bread Joe Jackson to my list.

Paul

I agree with others that the Just So Cy Young, N172 Anson in uniform should be there. I also think the T206 Cobb/Cobb back and our own moderator dude's Four Base Hits Kelly should be on the list.

Vic Willis went into the HOF in 1995...

Ten pre war cards I'd like to have, that I don't have, based on my desire, not the card's value:

T210 Old Mill series 6 Angermeier fielding
T210 Old Mill series 6 Barney
T210 Old Mill series 6 Goostree leaning on bat
T210 Old Mill series 6 Whitaker
T210 Old Mill series 8 Joe Jackson
T206 H Wagner
T206 E Plank
T206 Magie
N173 Harry Wright
E137 1915 Zeenut Fred McMullin

I think I could afford the first 4, if I could ever find them for sale... and a fellow just isn't going to put the Black Sox together without that 1915 Zeenut.

These aren't the ten most valuable pre war cards. But "most valuable" wasn't the question, now, was it? I'd rather have the T3 of Rhodes, than the T3 Willis. But either would be a nice card!

In no particular order based on a combination of rarity, significance, value, and most importantly what I like:

Zeenut - Thorpe
U.S. Caramel - Lindstrom
Just So - Young
(for simplicity) T206 - "key" cards
George Miller - Andrews
T3 Cobb
Old Mill - Jackson
Baltimore - Ruth
N162 - Beecher (football)
Peck & Snyder

...to difficult of a question. :--)

#5 T4 Weaver
#6 Tango Eggs Cobb

Just out of curiosity, why does the Cabanas Pete Hill show up on two lists? I knew the set itself is scarce, but didn't really know any cards within the set were particularly desireable or tough.

fkw,

Okay, Vic Willis got into the Hall of Fame in 1995 through the old veterans committee. Frankly, I didn't even notice that he snuck in through the backdoor. But Pete Hill I'm pretty sure is not a member of the Hall of Fame. So once again, what makes the Cabanas Pete Hill special.

I stand corrected on Pete Hill. I guess I didn't pay that much attention to the the special committee when they failed to elect Buck O'Neill.

In no particular order.

Just So Cy Young
N172 Anson in uniform
T206 Wagner
T206 Plank
T206 Cobb/Cobb back
T210 Joe Jackson
Baltimore News Babe Ruth
1933/4 Goudey Lajoie
1914/15 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson
Four Base Hits Kelley

I am probably forgetting some great cards, but these would be a good sampling in my book. And I have not even put any E cards in the list. Shame on me.

Edited for spelling and to add:

Henry Reccius Cigars Wagner
1919 White Sox Team Issue Joe Jackson
1913 A Fan For a Fan Cobb

I decided to amend my list slightly by including cabinets that most people don't consider true baseball cards:

1914 Baltimore Ruth
1893 Just So Cy Young
W600 Burkett
G&B Al Spaulding
Cabanas Pete Hill
1869 Peck & Snyder Reds
Red Stocking Cigar Radbourn
Warren Studios Cabinet George Wright
Warren Studios Cabinet Al Spalding (you can't go wrong with TWO Spaldings)
N142 Delahanty

I know it's not a card, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Cameo Pepsin pin of Sockalexis. Also, the Zeenut of Jimmy Claxton should make someone's top ten.

Guys,

The information that circulates through this forum helps make me a better and more informed collector. For instance, after checking my ACC I've realized that the M101-5 Babe Ruth #151 actually came out one year before the M101-4 Babe Ruth. Thus, the 1915 M101-5 Babe Ruth is the rookie card and more collectible.

Thanks for all your suggestions on a Top 10.

Peter

Peter, you might want to update your info Both the M101-4 and M101-5 are proven to now come from 1916. The M101-5 is from early 1916 (sold for $1 in ads in the Sporting News), and the M101-4 (updated version) is from Aug 1916 (ads first show up in Aug, ordered in series of 20 for 10 cents, or the complete set for a $2 subscription). The 1915 date is old info that is wrong.

If you look through old posts this subject has been brought up quite a few times and all the facts are in these old posts.

Ummm, OK, this will be fun:

1. T206 Wagner
2. T206 Cobb/Cobb Back
3. T205 Mathewson
4. T210 Jackson
5. E90-1 Jackson
6. 1914/15 Cracker Jack Jackson
7. Baltimore News Ruth
8. M101-5 Sporting News Ruth
9. 1934 Gehrig #37, Yellow Port (Best looking card in the Hobby, IMO)
10. 1933/34 Lajoie

***Leon- in a round about way, this can be a new poll, based on this post...it would be interesting to let this thread ride out a few days, then take the top 10 vote getting cards (i.e. T210 Jackson, T206 Wagner, Just So Young, etc...) see what an "ultimate Top 10" looks like.

While MVSNYC makes a good suggestion this thread has gotten a little off track. The way the topic was posed by the poster was:

"cards can be ones that you have or would like to have."

I guess what I'm saying is do all of you really "want" the cards you're listing or are you just listing the ten most rare and or valuable cards in the hobby?

i can only speak for myself...the 10 cards i listed are cards i really "want"...obviously many of them are rare, but look at some of my choices: 34 gehrig, T205 mathewson, for example...not rare or extremely valuable at all, just great looking cards, that i would love to have.

I wasn't necessarily speaking to your list. I was generalizing the content of many of the lists in this thread. I agree that your list, as was mine, is in keeping with the intent of the poster. It just seemed to me that some of the lists had cards that quite honestly I never knew existed.

I've seen a scan of the Punch Jose Mendez that Ryan put on his list and it's an excellent choice. I would guess most board members haven't seen it. Hopefully Ryan or the owner can post a scan.

2) N338-2 Getzien
3) N403 Brouthers
4) E223 Thompson
5) E223 Baldwin (Lady)
6) Tomlinson Cabinet of Dan Brouthers
7) Tomlinson Cabinet of Sam Thompson
8) N175 Brouthers
9) N175 Thompson
