Default free overprinting

As a service to the board, I am willing to offer a free "overprinting" service. Just mail me your rare caramel cards and I'll put nice color stamps on the back for nothing. So far I can only do butterflies (from practicing on Brian Daniels' wife) and patches of crabgrass, but I'm perfecting "Vinnie's Velocopeds and Coffee Shop"

I've always wondered about that, what's to stop someone from making a stamp that looks exactly like the known over prints? I din't know a whole lot about inks, but I would imagine that you would almost need to do a spetragraphic analysis to be able to tell the difference in ink.

It would be easy to make a fake stamp, and I'm confident it will be done if premiums are high for overprints.

Dating of inks is not easy or inexpensive. However, I beleive ink analyis of the modern stamps would be conculusive and damning. If anyone decided to make a bunch of faked stamps I am confident they would eventually wish they hadn't.

I'm the seller of the E94 Lake overprint that's currently up on eBay. I won't comment on the theme in this thread about faking stamps, but I fully guarantee the card I'm selling is legitimate.

I'm as discouraged as any other long-time collector about the selling of bogus cards on eBay, but I still believe you have to take each item on its own merits. Casting FUD (fear, uncertainty & doubt) about generalities doesn't help anyone.

Bill

Bill, no one this was aimed at your card on eBay. I know that when I was deeply involved in the hobby in the 80s the overprints were really nothing more than a couriosity that commanded a small premium at best. Not sure if it was the fact that they realized that the stamp could be faked easily or what, but with the way the current market is, I know I would be unloading any that I had just to take advantage it becuase with the prices realized lately, it's not going to take long for someone to start faking the overprints.
