Default How picky within the grade ?

Posted By: steve

How picky are you folks when considering purchase of T206 major HOFers - within the grade ?

I am looking for PSA/SGC T206 major HOFers in EXMT & NMT (6 and 7 grades). But not all 6's are created equal. Not all 7's are created equal.

Various flaws I see in 6 & 7's:

1) noticeable tilt cut, even ever so slight
2) centered 60/40 or worse
3) just seem short (trimmed perhaps) even when I realize it is sitting in a PSA slab
4) toning
5) print spots & soil spots

I do not even consider them for purchase. Tell myself to wait for a more problem free example.

When looking for a nice investment card, what percentage of cards within the grade do you folks actually consider for purchase? For me, push comes to shove, I probably consider no more then 25%

steve

I'm with you. I collect T206 HOFers in the EX to EX-MT range. I immediately reject about 80% of what I see for sale in this grade range for mostly the same reasons you mentioned -- off-center, skinny borders that make the card look trimmed, print defects, toning or staining. Good eye appeal to me means fat even borders, and decent image quality. A little honest corner wear doesn't bother me at all; in fact to me it gives the card a positive feeling of authenticity for its age. I see T206 sets on the PSA registry, with a much higher Grade Point Average than mine, that have PSA 7's and 8's with lousy centering that I would not have any interest whatsoever in owning.

I think you are talking about those cards that are net graded.

True. EX/MNT cards are sweet.

True to the grade is what many collectors strive for.
