Default What Is a Card You're Willing to Overpay On

If you saw this card at auction, you would say I got to have it. Upon seeing the card you start salivating. Although you normally have an auction budget, for this card you are willing to blow the budget. For me it would be the #1 Ramly Walter Johnson in EX-Nrmt. What is your card.

"overpay" is a relative term.
If I pay what I deem a lot on an eBay auction
and I win in, for that moment in time.
It is the market price, so it's neither high or
low....it is what it is.

Jay,

You are no fun, you know what I mean. The market value of the card is whatever, but you are willing to pay as much as it takes.

Seems like I overpay on every card.

Not that I have the cash to pay "whatever it takes" for anything, but if I could find a low number '38 Goudey Hank Greenberg, Rip Radcliff or Joe Medwick, or a high number Jimmy Foxx in EXMT or better condition, I would be willing to pay more than a lot of people would.

Not a card, but it would be a 1904 or 1906 W601 Sporting Life Supplement Buffalo team composite. Haven't seen one offered in years.

I buy something that doesn't really fit into my collection, but that is a relative technicality based only on my collection.

More in the spirit of your question, I would have to say that I WILL pay more than market for whatever turns out to be the last card I need for my T206 Cubs set....I know I will do it. Just don't know when or which one it will be!

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of posts about value, overpaying, underpaying, appreciation, etc.?

As a diversion, I would refer the Board back to a previous post of mine which dealt more with general collecting habits and a curiousity regarding Mr. Carter's collection.

Well, Peter S., I do much prefer the concept of a "collector's forum", as opposed to an "investor's forum".

How can money not be a major topic on this board when you see common T206 cards in excellent shape going for $800?

I have placed snipes on certain cards at a level that I thought was 2x value.

Then I would cross my fingers.
If there was another fool out there - I would hope he was even more foolish than I.
Worst case would be if there was someone almost as foolish.

Peter C.,

what is an example of a card that you personally feel that you overpaid for?

For me, it was a could 1933 Goudey Ruths, that I needed to complete the set.

I eagerly await your response.

Josh

Like the above poster i would overpay to have an E222, but one hasnt been offered for sale in so long you could hardly say whatever it sold for, no matter how much, would be overpaying, just todays market value. No one would pay more then marketvalue for a T206 wagner or cobb/cobb back?

(3) Different AWH Caramels were sold among some T cards last year on ebay and I think Dave Levin won the lot but I cant remember the price. I think they went for around 2K each or about 6K-8K for the entire lot but I could be off. I am sure someone else here remembers it too as there was a little debate about it on the forum I think. It should give an idea of what the last ones sold for though.

None at the moment. I was lucky enough to make some key acquisitions at "normal" prices the last 6 months and to have been given the biggest key by a 54er, David McDonald.

The eBay lot with the AWH caramels sold a little over $12K. Best T206 of the bunch was a green Cobb with back damage. I believe 2 of the AWH's were SGC 10 and the other 2 were 20's. If I remember correctly, the AWH lot had all of the known back variations.

The E222 lot sold for just over 12k. Davin Levin was the winner, another board member was the runner-up, and I was the third under bidder at 8.5k. The players were Guiheen, Otey, Sieber, and Smith. David had the four on display at the National and they were beautiful, despite their lower grades. The four are no longer available as they all four went to a single buyer who i'm sure will hold onto them for a while.

Besides the grouping of four on eBay, i've seen four others sell in the past three years in public auctions. They're tough but they do show up.

Edited to add that I would overpay for an N338-2 Foster or any of the final 5 cards needed to complete my T210-2 set.
