With the success of the "What you look like" and "Hobbies" thread, I'd thought it'd be interesting to find the "provenience of your on-line name" (if anyone uses the term 'handle' I'll scream).

warshaw + law = warshawlaw

I use warshawlaw.net as my firm web address

boxing cards + man = boxingcardman

As most of you are tired of hearing, I collect boxing cards too.

I guess with this uncreative approach I should change my name to "Joe Friday" (just the facts).

sabrjay is SABRjay. SABR is the Society for American Baseball Research. I've had this internet handle (sorry, couldn't resist) since 1988 back when the only place to talk about anything was on USENET.

Mafoli is one of the old French estates in St. Thomas. I lived there for a couple of years in the early eighties. Maybe some of you remember The Mafoli Hotel? Looking to get back there (or near there) soon. Ebay made me add a q to the end of it. hence Mafoliq

Thanks for the opportunity to explain that silly name!!

My screenname has a long history...my original screenname on USENET was Whiteness, a high school nickname given to me while I was playing basketball with my varisty team name (I am very pale/white and the team was predominately african american---and one of the guys knew I loved Richie "Whitey" Ashburn)...when IBM came out with a free online service called Promenade (the forerunner to AOL) my screen name was given a 3 because you were required to have letters and numbers...I had to shorten it to "Wite3" a few years later when Promenade officially became AOL and we had a limit on characters for e-mailing (no such thing as address lists in 1990 yet and you had to type out everyones screen name by hand). Was just easier for my trading groups and friends to type Wite3...

Sigh. I guess I'll join the unimaginative side of the room. jmk59 = initials and year of birth.

But at some point, ability to remember it becomes more important than being imaginative, especially since the need for different formatted userid's, etc increases. I have only three or so, one of which fits almost any website, ERP, any format requirement out there.

Uffda is a mild Norwegian expletive - the kind of thing a stoic Norwegian bachelor farmer mutters under his breath after he accidentally stabs himself in the foot with a pitchfork. Very common in Minnesota and other parts of the midwest. My Mom's side of the family was Norwegian. 51=birth year.

Posted By: Genaro

I was born on the feast of San Gennaro. My parents spelled it with one n after my Grandfather who came over here when his village was bombed out in 1917. He came over here at 13 and lived in a stable on Ellis Island and stayed there till he was 16 when he was married off by one of New York's finest mounted unit to his niece. I believe the spelling error was due to the name takers when he came off the boat. So they spelled it the same when I was born. A big deal if you was a Italian kid from NY. 007 was when I went to get my 1st email account Genaro . The 007 part is when I couldn't get just Genaro I choose to ad 007 because I loved James Bond movies as a kid. Corny I know.

The "story" (although I would not expect this to make a bestseller list)
behind the familytoad comes cyclically from Elton John's "Goodby Yellow Brick Road" where he speaks of going "Back to the howling old owl in the woods,hunting the horny back toad..."

I had that song on my mind when choosing a fantasy football team back in 1987, selected The Horny Toads and remained so until 1992 when I got married and migrated, drifted, slipped or otherwise transitioned to the Family Toads.

I almost chose the less remembered but much better anthem "The Last Resort" by the Eagles to serve as my nom de rotisserie, but I didn't want it to bring me bad luck and have me actually finish last...

Alas the Toads have won as many fantasy Super Bowls as the Seahawks whether they were Horny or not...

Signed,
Familytoad

ramram - Well, considering my ebay id had to be at least six characters and my initials are ram...quite unique, eh?

Kind of like when I started my own business, I thought about a lot of unique names but came up with "Morgan Engineering". I've always figured there's alot to be said for name recognition. If your name matches up with your company name (or ID) people aren't left scratching their head quite as much.

Judge Dred (Fred) - my name is Fred (as if you didn't figure that one already). The Judge Dred part is because I dread seeing Old Judge cards because it usually means that I'm going to open my wallet yet again for another piece of card board, also, I like the Judge Dred(d) series. The JudegeDred2 is because I had a pretty bad hard drive failure and I forgot my N54 password so I started over again with JudgeDred2.

I am a Budweiser true American Hero (no offense to the service men and women that are our true heros). I work as a night manager in a bowling center. It was dedicated to me one night during league as a joke so I one upped them and had shirts made up with that on the back and have worn it ever since as my work short. I have fun with it and the customers get a kick out of it. Shortened the name up for the board.

My name -Cat- is based on my EBay sales account handle (catonglue). "Cats On Glue" was the name of an intramural softball team I played on in undergrad (long ago).

Rose-hof_selig-sob (is my account I purchase in on EBay) was simply a message I felt strongly about. I felt it said a lot with very few character strokes...kind of like how they name race horses. Selig is in a role to judge Pete Rose, while Selig has less than a spotless record when it comes to following the rules of baseball. His loans from Pohlad were a strict violation of the rules of baseball...nothing ever came of that and he was COMMISSIONER at the time. It's a joke that he is called Baseball Commissioner. He is paid by the owners. He works for the owners. To pretend that he is some independent figure for the good of the game is also a joke. No one can really believe that the owners and Commissioner were blind to the steriod abuse...but the Commissioners Office turned their back because the owners were making money from it. At least there is no misconception as to who Donald Fehr works for.

My Net54 login ID is just a shortened version of my email address and they (also rather uncreatively) are simply the initials of the first names of the members of my family:

K = Kevin (me)
K = Kara (daughter)
K = Kyle (son)
K = Kelly (daughter)
and
P = Paula (wife)

That was also my original ebay handle until they forced us to change. My current ebay ID (ephman54) has to do with the nickname of my college's sport teams, Ephs or Ephmen (after the college's founder, Revolutionary War colonel Ephraim Williams), plus my football jersey number. My purple cow avatar is my college's mascot.

Having been a long time collector of Rhode Island brewery advertising as well as long time Red Sox fan and recent pre-war collector of Sox stuff, I use "HiNeighbor" because it was the slogan of the Narragansett Brewing Company from the late 40s through the 60s. Narragansett just so happened to be a major advertiser and supporter of the Red Sox. Many who are old enough will remember Curt Gowdey and his "Hi Neighbor have a Gansett" calls.

By the Way Kevin.....Have you ever seen a can of Purple Cow lager that was put out by Narragansett during the 60s for two class reunions? Thought of you when I saw your purple cow.

Kevin, here's your cow. It was made for the 25th Reunion of the Class of 39. Some, but not many, did survive and they're pretty rare birds (but not as rare as the olive drab WW2 can - one of two known to exist - and the light ale at the far right). Hope you enjoyed seeing it.

Mine comes from the aiplane I fly. I am a US Air Force test pilot on an exchange tour with the UK's Royal Air Force test center. I mostly fly the C-130 Hercules amongst other things. Although not as pointy and fast as some of the other stuff I fly, it is like being in a comfortable, old pick-up truck!
