ok, what card do you currently hoard solely because your a greedy bastard? DIFFERENT BACKS DONT COUNT EITHER. I currently have 14 signed willis hudlin 1933 goudeys mainly because I kept finding the card cheap and because Hudlin lived FOREVER. Though I only got two Gus Suhr's so go figure?
Let see what ya got!

if you didn't discount "backs" I was going to throw one(or more) at ya....As for cards in general, I am more inclined to hoard rare ones, if possible...I know I pick up all of the E221's and E222's I can (which approaches 0). Also, if I see a nice Virginia Extra or red backed Crofts....I might go for it....Not really doing the sets (except D303,1916 Big Head and T209-1 in lower grade) and already have a type of most cards so any others really is "hoarding", in a way.....

Collecting the master set of E94s with every possible background color is my only claim to the greedy bast**d mantle, I guess. I don't have a specific card which I am hoarding like some here though...

to try accumulating a card.
I'm not terribly determined to hoard it, though you never know...

I called around to some of the larger card dealers and cleaned them out of current inventory, or at least so they said....so we'll see where this takes us-could be fun

trophybob,

When you finish that E94 master set, you have to set up a website or something so we can worship it!

How close are you these days? Let's all help him finish it already.

Sean's post reminds me of that crazy time in the early 1990's when people (including non-hobbyists) would load up on several hundred rookie cards of the next big phenom. I wonder if Brien Taylor is single-handedly responsible for the demise of that trend?!

Not really because I am greedy but because it is my all time favorite card of my all time favorite player. 1969 Topps Frank Robinson. I have 124 of them.

I think I have an uncut sheet with Maas (and Dave Justice) on it. Are you thinking REA or Mastro?

Jim, as long as Eric Anthony, Ben McDonald, Todd Zeile and Junior Felix are on there you would be crazy to not consign that piece.

At least Todd Zeile stuck around for awhile. Let's not forget Mark Lewis and Monty Fariss. Gosh, I miss those old cards from Topps and Bowman with future stars posing in their paisley shirts, gold chains, and Vanilla Ice hair!

Are you all forgetting Gregg Jeffries? I thought he started the trend that Maas finally killed?

Two Words:

Ozzie Canseco!

Two more words:

Jerome Walton

Another Couple:

Dwight Smith

Perhaps second to Maas is my all-time favorite, Gregg Jefferies. His '88 Fleer rookie card used to sell for $20!

That is pretty funny Jodi... I remember collecting those Topps superstar Jeffries cards as a kid. At the time, it was the most expensive card I ever bought (paid $3 for it). Of course, I was 7 years old.

Grace isn't really applicable. He was a Chicago mainstay. I think that a comparable player who does fit in the category is Ellis Burks. Then again, if you are only thinking of the situation from a purely monetary standpoint, then your point is definitely valid!

Greenwell, by all means. Throw in Sam Horn.

Clevelanders will recall Alex Cole who was king of the city for a few weeks back in 1990; his RC was selling for over $20.

Currently, I have more than my share of 2004 Topps Heritage cards of Albert Pujols, the chrome ones. There are supposedly 1955 of them, sequentially numbered. I have several, and plan on buying more as I come across them.

As to why one would do this... that is ever so slightly OT from the original post, so I decline to incriminate myself at this time.

Why would one do this, Greg? Well why grown men for the most part collect little pieces of cardboard to begin with? It's our passion and without passion, why pursue it at all?

Okay all...

I do hoard cards of Magee in prewar circles.
Post war, I have nearly 500 1981 Topps Mickey Hatcher cards...my favorite quote on playing baseball was Mickey once saying, "I would rather be the worst player in the major leagues than not be in the major leagues at all."

As to overpriced rookies that went nowhere...I can contribute to the Phillie side of it: Ricky Jordan.

Joshua

Jeff,

I recall Todd Van Poppel and his cards... Once he went back down I saw him pitch in Nashville in 1999, trying to work his way back up. I thought he wouldn't make it back. But he did. At Nashville he seemed huge alongside the young AAA rookies. But it was obvious that he was thinking out there when he was pitching, and outclassing the young bucks in AAA most of the time.

When he made it back he was with the Cubs. He was at Cincy in 04, pitched in a bunch of games, even started a few. I saw him there that year. No idea where he is now.

Those cards were firecracker hot for a brief spell...

Ahem, aren't we forgetting somebody.......Joe Charboneau. Honorable mention to Cory Snyder, Kal Daniels, Danny Tartabull, Tracy Jones, Dave Magadan, Ramon Martinez and so on.

As to why one collects multiples of the same card, I can only speak for myself, but when I see a card I already have at a great price I have a hard time saying no.

That must be after I stopped caring!!!

Another one who has yet to be mentioned is Houston flop Eric Anthony! I loved the mention of Ricky Jordan, though! I had totally forgotten! That takes me back to '89!!!
