Gone With the Stain for a soak?

Ever since I picked this item up last week, I've read a lot of old threads on Gone With the Stain and its history. Has anyone used this service since Dick passed away?

I don't expect to make soaking a hobby -- I just want it for this one item -- so I'd rather trust a pro than my non-existent skills.

Yeah, more info is obviously needed. Is the 'card' adhered to the canvas and you want it removed? Is that the issue? Or is it something else?

Perhaps oddly, I find the card more attractive adhered to the burlap. I would leave it as-is.

I don't collect 19th Century cards, though, nor do I know much about that segment of the hobby. So, mine is just an "eye of the beholder" opinion. It's possible this is just an eyesore to most collectors.

I've removed one from scrap book paper before. They are pretty thick/solid cardboard. Not sure what burlap is like....

The one nice thing with it being on burlap is that it should be much easier to tell right through the slab what type of adhesive was used. If you're seeing any sort of discoloration on the back as the result of the glue, I would guess that to mean a harsher adhesive was used. If it's light in color, or not much evidence of anything, I'd venture it was attached with a paste and thereby a safer candidate for an easy soak.

The piece itself appears free from creases. My main concern with cards from such sets would be creases on things like arms, legs, heads or bats--any thinner, narrow areas which would be extra prone to separation if soaked.

I have never soaked this issue, so definitely defer to others with more familiarity.

Thank you for the insight. The back looks like a completely different surface and I can’t see any residue. The die cut is really small and I assume quite delicate — just not sure it’s worth the risk trying to separate since they’re not highly valuable to begin with.

Well, that was an unforeseen surprise! Something glued on the other side as well! Guess you'll never truly know unless you crack it.

Like others have said, it looks pretty nice as is. And it's already slabbed, for those who like that sort of thing.

I believe someone else thought it might be an idea to simply buy another copy since these apparently aren't terribly costly. Might be the way to go.

Yeah I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with the look — wish it was more of an even-cut square, but it’s actually a pretty cool backing.
