Default Those that own or have seen CSG graded cards

Hey guys,

Those of you who actually own or have examined CSG graded cards. What’s your real world thoughts for vintage and modern? I’m seeing more and more nice grades for some higher end cards for way less than PSA/SGC. I’m sure with price and lead time for PSA that more and more are moving to CSG. Wondering if I should start looking at buying some??? I know resale won’t be the same, just a way to get some higher end cards for less. I just don’t want to find out they really over grade or grade cards with numeric numbers that shouldn’t get a grade.

Default Csg

Hi Reg- I understand your question, as I was in the same mindset as you. I
bought 2 CGSs already graded, to "dip my toe in the water": an 81 Topps FB
Walter Payton 6.5, and a 56 Topps Baseball Roy Campanella 5. So, one card
is modern and the other vintage. My impression is positive thus far, the new
company got the grades right- the Campy is especially bright. I can't comment
on ultra recent cards, as they all seem to be 9+ anyway when graded. If you
are just curious about CSG actually getting the grade right, I'm happy with
what I have seen. Trent King

Megalimey-

Since you asked people to compare the Mantles, I did. Not a big fan of
arriving at preferences when looking at photos, but if pressed I'd say I
prefer the CSG because I like it's centering.
The point, however, wasn't about hammer values per the original OP. He
specifically mentioned foreknowledge that other companies would get the
better values. In terms of actually getting the grade right- something I value
even though some graders don't- I'm optimistic about CSG currently. It's
hard to do worse than PSA in terms of grading accuracy/consistency so, if
CSG keeps getting it right at a fraction of the cost, that's a win for collectors.

I don't think the prices were driven by the slab but by the card... And rightly so. That CSG 5 has soft corners, poor color and a couple of big wrinkles on the right side. I have no idea how it achieved a 5.

How could that CSG possibly grade anywhere near a 5? The card is a mess. If that's a legit picture, that is all you'd need to know about the legitimacy of CSG as a grading company.

I bought a couple of CSG cards. They were more modern (1980's) and I thought they were graded correctly. But that Mantle should never have gotten anywhere near a 5 no matter who's grading it. I've included pictures from the CSG 5 and then up close detail of the card.

The grade on the 1960 Mantle is egregious.

I sent in a group of cards at the outset and was pleased with the service and the results. The holders are almost exactly the same size as PSA (they fit into the form-fitting plastic sleeves designed for PSA holders) and I do appreciate the mylar card condoms that prevent sliders and damage from the edges of the SGC gasket. The only card I sold in a CSG holder got the same price as a PSA or BVG card would have but it was a very popular card at the time (Mike Tyson rookie card).

I bought a 1967 Topps Brooks R checklist in a CSG holder. I was pleased with the card and the grade they assigned it. I think they have a bright future in the hobby if they can stay out of trouble and go things accurately.
