Default How can I "give thanks" to SGC...

Posted By: Hal Lewis

How can I "give thanks" to SGC on Thanksgiving when they just KILLED ME on the grading of my newest addition??

If YOU can find the "paper loss" on the back of this card without a 200x micrsoscope... then you have better eyes than me.

This card was graded and sold by Mastro several years ago as EX+... and SGC says it would have graded much higher without the "paper loss."

I challenge SGC to look at all the other E107's they have slabbed and find another one as nice as this one. If they find one... it darn sure won't be a 40.

Heck, YOU tell ME if this card should have graded higher than the Cy Young card:

Rounded corners, stained...

...upper left-hand corner?

Still beautiful - who cares what the grade is?

...of course it's still beautiful. Looks like what we woiyld today call a "missing pixel," as in variation B of the '52 Mantle. Please, nobody ask. You don't want to know...

Oh, precisely.

I bought the card ungraded and could care LESS what the grade is, since the card will never leave my collection and "resale value" is irrelevant...

but it still seems a little crazy that something as "invisible" as the spec of paper loss on the back that does NOT affect the printing should knock it down to a 40.

And NO, I was NOT able to pry this one away from Scott Brockleman, who still has TWO such beauties -- one with the rare purple Breisch Williams stamp on back!!

Scott wants to trade one for an E107 Matty... so someone PLEASE help the man out!

I think the little white spot on the front is something that was on my scanner or on the outside of the slab. I will have to check and make sure next time I go to the safe deposit box.

They're both awesome cards.

Thanks.

Yes, that was my only complaint.

One of the two cards is infinitely more pleasing to the eye...

and it gets the lower grade.

Then again, according to their Pop Report... SGC has NEVER graded ANY E107's higher than a 50... so I guess they are just very "tight."

Oh well, like I said... the actual grade is not as important to me as the fact that it is slabbed and protected from my clumsiness.

Well, when you're are paying money and trusting the co. with your collectibles, you would like them to provide a service that is CONSISTENT...so personally, I understand your complaint. Especially with a card like that.

it seems the grading companies grade tought one time, then right on the money the next submission. Also, the bigger names - such as Young or Cobb, are graded HARSHLY by SGC and GAI! The Young does look at least VG/EX to me - but that doesn't mean anything! You think that is bad, I have two 1915 CJ's I thought were EX and VG/EX LOCKS that GAI just slabbed both as 2's!!!!!!!!!!! I even looked the cards over with my loupe and NOTHING to be found - of course they haven't arrived back yet - knowing my luck the grader dropped them while looking at them or something.

Good points. I also believe that grading companies see so many poor and fair examples of rare issues, that they sometimes give several examples higher grades than they deserve.

Personally, I wouldn't care what grade that card gets. Just enjoy owning it. But Hal, if you don't want it, it'll go GREAT sitting next to the blank back example in my collection...

If there is surface loss, which I think I see in the area Scott mentioned, that is a pretty big thing to consider when assessing the physical condition of a card. I don't feel a card with physical damage can be called "ex" and "vg"is only one grade down. I own E-cards in SOLID ex/mt condition with small spot of damage and they came back "30".

What are you going to do....

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Scott is correct in pointing out the "spot" where there is tiny paper loss.

Maybe I will get lucky and in 25 years, everyone will start gluing ALL of their vintagev cards into scrapbooks again.

Then backs won't matter!!!

Why have it slabbed if your keeping it ?

A one inch lucite screwdown ,sleeved and centered would have given it more distinction.

Nevertheless, oh....I can think of many combination trades to you that would benefit me and mine. Anyway... Dan Koteles is jealous

Dan, I guess I also needed the "authentication" that went along with the slabbing so that I could sleep well at nights knowing that I am not the victim of some great counterfeiter.

i have had similar problems with sgc and grading lately. the killed me on some e- and n- cards that i submitted. they said that under 20x the creases are obvious, well just about anything is obvious under that high power. they refused to even reconsider the grade

and we discussed two items, mostly: first, that SGC doesn't grade cards with the "authentic" label abd second, that SGC is brutal on its grading of caramel cards. The guy I spoke to on the phone, Scott, was very cordial and expressed the opinion that perhaps the refusal to grade cards as "authentic" would be changing in the future because of the growing interest in having cards from sets which are commonly "hand-cut" graded. Case in point is the 1909 Obak set in which it is common to see handcut cards as opposed to the 1910 and 1911 Obaks sets in which you almost never see hand-cut cards.
Scott acted a little taken aback when I mentioned SGC's brutal grading of caramel cards. I did tell him that I thought the grading was generally consistent and less subjective with respect to whom the submitter was than other companies but he appeared a little surprised at the opinion that their caramel card grading was so harsh. Anyone who has seen EXMT cards with a tiny bit of back damage come back as 30 (2 Good) knows exactrly what I am talking about, not to mention the nice creaseless cards with some light corner wear which come back 20 or 30. They are super tough.

I just purchased a very nice and very rare "handcut" card that had to be slabbed by GAI as "authentic" because SGC would not not do it.

I hope that if enough of us complain, we can get them to at least start slabbing cards as "authentic" that come from sets that were SUPPOSED to be hand cut!

I would MUCH RATHER have this card in an SGC holder than a GAI holder... so I will keep begging them and see if it gets me anywhere.

SGC grades strips cards, so I don't understand why they would have a problem grading "hand cut" cards and using the authentic label.

They aren't brutal on jsut e-cards. Try submitting a cards from any set they aren't familiar with. My Indian cards would get hammered mercilessly when I submitted them. Kieth O'Leary can back me up on this one, even though N2s are identical in stock, production, etc to n28/29s, the N2s will get a much harsher grade then their baseball counterparts.

Jay

I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff. And I want in.

Just another example of "The Man" trying to hold the Indians down.
