It's not necessarily an "Athletics" team. Even if you confine it just to Pennsylvania teams, there are a number of minor league possibilities based just on team nicknames, and probably many other semi-pro and town teams besides these:

I'm not saying all of those are possibilities, as the dates certainly rule most out, but just to give you an idea. Glancing at a map, I see that Carbondale is close by, and it looks like they have a 50+ year gap between "official" minor league teams during which time I'm sure they didn't just stop fielding teams, so that's where I would start. Maybe post closer scans of the equipment and their hats (can't quite make out the letter there, is it also an 'A'?) to see if anyone can narrow down the time frame. It's a neat photo, and I look forward to seeing what you are able to find out.
