to answer petes ?. no minor league team had any connection with a major league team till branch rickey innovated the system w/stl cards. they operated independently and sold better players to the majors.(to the highest bidder) at first it was thought that rickeys "farm" system would ruin the minor leagues but as we now know it helped them survive. soon after rickey innovated the farm system all the major league teams followed suit.
