edacraI used to chase down autographs at the player hotels, and MLB functions when I was younger, and there were these older guys who had been doing it so long they remember Barry Bonds from when he was a toddler. I picture their homes must be busrting at the seams, and I'm sure every major city has a hand full of guys just like them. How the hell do collectors like that cash out? That's why I really think provenance is more important at some point.
I stopped collecting autographs around the time people started authenticated them, and issuing COA's. I even have a Ted Williams signed photo I'd love to sell, that I got directly from his son, but there's no letter proving it.
