I think that the sale of a ball card results in plain old ordinary income.

That would not be true if it is a business, that keeps inventory, and buys and sells stock (as in cards, not shares).

For individuals, basis applies to real estate, stocks.... a baseball card is not an investment, notwithstanding folks who want it to be one.
