They're not really supposed to be interchangeable.

Farther is used when actually or metaphorically speaking of distance. He can hit a ball farther than anyone. He went farther up the corporate ladder than any of his peers.

Further is used when speaking of non tangible progression. He was able to further his ideas with the forum.
