I think the theory that it had something to do with the "Lou Gehrig Says" promotion makes sense. Perhaps they asked Ruth first and he wanted too much money. Or he was offended that they didn't ask.

I don't think it was becasue he was going to retire. I believe that was after 34. In 33 he went .301/34/114.
