I like the idea of being a whim collector. Guys, don't take this hobby too seriously. In some ways I'm similar to you, I collect various ways. I collect by the star, Ruth, Gehrig, Mays etc. I also collect by the time period. There's my pre-war collection, vintage etc. Then I collect by the set.
I enjoy collecting this way. The only drawback is for stars like Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson, I'll end up having triples of some of their cards. A T-206 for my star collection. One for my pre-war collection. And one for the set. It can get pretty expensive. But having triples of the Babe isn't that bad. Laugh out loud.
