Instead of blaming the seller (who I agree should catch some shrapnel as his response to the "question" is pretty ignorant) why don't we also blame the person or people who buy this stuff?
Due-dilligance really isn't that difficult what with all the research that had gone into card collection. You wanna pay three-figures for something that was cut out of a book? Fine. Same with someone who spends $800.00 on a bottle of wine or an autograph or even just s simple cardboard baseball card.... To some this is "collectible" and obviously they have the income to spend on it.
I've been quite active on another board and people there all the time question why others collect what they do or why they would want a certain piece because it doesn't fit "their idea" of what's collectible. Who cares???
Was the guy misleading in his post or just completely ignorant? Who knows but, as with Ebay, someone will buy it and pay stupidly.
