Default Topps 1954 Scoops Advice...Calling all wannabe Card Doctors..

Posted By: Kevin Saucier

Tests:

I had one card with both scratch off lines in-tact. Only minor but deep scratches.

Test 1: Hand friction, finger rub and dry swab - all no luck
Test 2: Distilled water soak - zilch
Test 3: Water soak and cotton swab rub - nothing
Test 4: Light chemical "a" - nope (thought that would work)
Test 5: Light chemical "b" - no
Test 6: Chemical "c" w/ water soak and swabbed - nada
Test 7: Chemical "d" w/ water soak and swabbed -
Test 8: Semi-harsh chemical "e" immersion - Bingo! (whew, only had a couple more tests left, one involved loosing skin)

Results - although one chemical did eventually dissolve the coating, it did have a minor affect on the card surface and ink. Not sure it the paper loss was already there imbedded into the scratches.

Nonetheless with the coating removed, the card also lacked all gloss to that area. This was not a result of the chemical since the areas without the coating still had luster.

Conclusion: Keep as is, use/find a "very very light" abrasive or ask another card doctor....I tried.
