At that point they likely didn't have enough grounds to believe the property was in there, it could well have been in a storage locker, or elsewhere, but they certainly had grounds to arrest/interrogate the perp based on prints/video. Observation of the property during the course of the arrest gave them all the grounds they needed to obtain a warrant for the house. (I'm assuming U.S. criminal law is similar to Canadian). Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
