For that one golden season, how about Smokey Joe Wood? Or Big Ed Walsh during his 40 win season?
If you were playing the Giants, I'd go with Jack "The Giant Killer" Pfeister. If you were playing the Yankees, it would be Frank Lary.
I remember a noted and respected sports journalist said a while back that he had seen them all, from Matty to Gibson, and for ONE game, he would pitch Carl Hubbell. He said he was the best big game pitcher who ever lived.
