I agree, the slug is nice, and it is better to have one than not have one, but you don't really need it to tell if the print is vintage and 1st generation. I see news service photos all of the time that have "slugs" that were printed 20-30 years after the fact. Don't rely on the slugs to tell you if the piece is vintage. The best way to tell is by simply holding it, feeling it and looking at it.
