Default Vintage Photo Question

Is their any significance to some vintage photos (meaning 1910's, 1920's) having a white frame on the photo paper surrounding the image?

When I see vintage photos out there some have it others do not. Was it just the camera and or development of the film?

Do vintage photo collectors prefer it on or off, or insignificant?
