I first read a post on this board about it and when he mentioned the Mantle 8.5 I asked him about it.
Apparently there is a very strong private market for high end cards. A lot of flipping is what it sounds like is taking place. If one wanted to point to a warning sign that could be one in general. For prices of assets to hold long term you need strong hands. The 1952 Mantle in the highest grades are clearly in them and this is obviously helping drive up the prices for the card.
I am of the mind set that the higher the prices go the more desirable the cards become and this leads to even greater interest. The exact opposite of what you learn in economics classes.
A high grade 1952 Topps Mantle is the gold standard and anyone can buy into the idea it should be valuable.
