Here offered is the largest and finest George Burke photo collection ever presented at auction; it is without a doubt one of the best such assemblies in private hands. The National Pastime's personnel are captured, in this peerless gallery, in a manner that's impossible to achieve through any other medium. This is a thoroughly engrossing gathering of more than 2,500 pictures produced by the Windy City outfit (200 of which can be viewed on our website). Ever-present at Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park, Chicagoan George Burke set out in 1929 to compile the most complete portfolio of player portraits—a feat made possible by the presence of both an American League team and a National League squad within the same city. As the official photographer for the Chicago Cubs, Burke quickly became renowned for his candid pre-game photos and thought-provoking portrait depictions. Over the course of several decades, the photos comprising this impressive archive—all of which were produced from Burke's original negatives—were obtained by a Chicago-area collector directly from the Burke studio. The significantly extensive assortment of mainly first-generation, 4" x 6" photos has truly captured the essence of America's game as it existed during the early 20th Century, and each sepia-toned example carries its own vintage "feel." Showcased within this collection are a number of single-subject, multi-subject, and team shots made iconic by various card sets and publications such as Who's Who in the Major Leagues, The Sporting News, and Baseball Digest. Each original masterpiece reveals a fresh portrayal of the bygone ballplayers—many of whom were obscure, short-term roster occupants whose likenesses were rarely preserved in photos—as the mostly matte or satin-finish photos present a crisp and visually alluring aesthetic quality. The well-preserved keepsakes exhibit a slight curve in the cardboard with minor corner wear and occasional instances of modest surface faults, which are undoubtedly the natural result of years of storage. Yet, these being the only nominal blemishes, the remarkable remembrances generally project about EX condition or higher. As is customary with Burke, his stamping can be found on the lower corners of the item's reverse in most instances. Among the ballplayers pictured—many of whom appear multiple times in differing poses—are Hugh Alexander, Ethan Allen, Mel Almada, Paul Andrews, Pete Appleton, Jim Asbell, Earl Averill, Dick Bartell, Lester Bartholomew, Bill Beckman, Joe Beggs, Moe Berg, Louis Berger, Charley Berry, Herman Besse, Ray Blades, Fred Blake, Jim Bottomley, Bob Bowman, Bob Bragan, Ed Brandt, Don Brennan, Fred Brickell, Lloyd Brown, Earl Brucker, Paul Busby, Guy Bush, Max Butcher, Bruce Campbell, Tex Carleton, Joe Cascarella, Hugh Caset, Spud Chandler, Ben Chapman, Cap Clark, Edward Cole, Eddie Collins, Jr., Rip Collins, Earl Combs, Red Corriden, Roger Cramer, Otis Crandall, Bill Crouch, Al Cuccinello, Kiki Cuyler, Curt Davis, Dizzy Dean, Frank Demaree, Paul Derringer, George Dickey, Vince DiMaggio, Joe Dobson, Ed Durham, Leo Durocher, Jimmy Dykes, George Earnshaw, Hugh East, Ray Edwards, Harry Eisenstat, Woody English, Paul Erickson, Nick Etten, William Ewing, Red Faber, Bob Feller, Rick Ferrell, Wes Ferrell, Lew Fonseca, Rube Foster, Pete Fox, Jimmie Foxx, Larry French, Lonnie Frey, Frank Frisch, Carl Furillo, Bob Garbark, Sid Gautreaux, Lou Gehrig, Chas.
