I am not sure why, but that certainly seems to be the case. When I listen to the interviews on the "Glory of Their Times" CD, the players interviewed seem to think that Wagner was by far the best player they have played with or against. When their contemporaries say Wagner was the greatest, I think this has to hold a lot of weight.
