That's a great photo. 1939 World Series, I believe the day before Game 1. Ernie's unfairly labeled "Big Swoon" came later in this Series. The 1939-40 Reds were the first Big Red Machine. But they ran up against a Yankees buzz saw in 1939 that saw the Yankees with 4 consecutive World Series titles when it was over. Then the Reds won it all in 1940, with basically the same team. 1940 is the year Jimmy Wilson had to come out of retirement to catch. Read about that. Incredible story. My avatar is Joltin' Joe and Bucky Walters at the 1939 All Star Game. 2 of my all time favorites, but that's another story.
