A cursory look at Carlton on Google shows that perhaps he was/is a bit of a crackpot conspiracy theorist and he preferred to throw to Tim McCarver rather then Bob Boone.
Other then that, I would guess only people who really know him would know the answer to that, as he's been pretty tight-lipped throughout his life.
