Default Trivia

Doug and Peter

OK, here's my understanding of the events...circa 1920 - 1923.

The Yankees, with the acquisition of Babe Ruth in 1920, significantly outdrew the Giants at the Polo Grounds.
This drove McGraw "nuts" with envy. That year, Ban Johnson, John McGraw, and Charles Stoneham "ban-ded"
(excuse the pun) together to force the Yankees to leave New York and move to Boston.

Fortunately, this attempt was aborted. A motivated Colonel Huston and Jake Ruppert in May 1921 purchased
a property in the Bronx to lay the groundwork for a Stadium that would exceed the capacity (60,000 seats)
of the Roman Colosseum. A year later construction started and on Opening Day 1923 Yankee Stadium opened
its gates to the public.
