We used to spend hours and hours studying early baseball history to learn more about a particular piece, and to understand why it was significant.
I think to a great degree that is a lost art. We live in a world of instant gratification, and a slab will give you that. Everything you need to know about a card is on the handy little label. That is what collectors want, and that's why the hobby has headed in that direction.
And I've learned to accept it for what it is.
