Default Australian Boxing cards...

Posted By: David Hanvey

If you visit the link Adam posted above and go to the cards section, you may see a few examples (they are shown in years, but each card has the country of release noted)

If you need to know anything on Australian boxing cards, send me an email (bcd@boxingcarddigest.com). I have catalogued just about every card ever released and have a lot of information on the sets issued.

There are 19th Century cards, which were issued by American company Goodwin & Co , with their Old Judge cigarettes (often referred to as "Aussie" N174's). These are very rare, and often expensive when found. There are full sets, such as the 1922 Herbert & Davies Newcastle Boxers set, and boxers also appear in many multi sport sets (Joe Louis even appears in the 1949 Vic nut set, along with 6 other boxers).

More common cards include cards of Hall of Famer Les Darcy from the 1932 Sweetacres and 1933 BDV Cigarettes sets.

Unfortunately most of the Australian issues are very hard to find, although when found they are generally reasonably priced.

Outside of cigarette and trade cards, you can even collect postcard sized Stadium Cards. These cards were issued during the mid teens (c. 1913/14) as an advertisement for up coming fights at Sydney Stadium. They are also difficult to locate, but can look fantastic.
