Alcohol is always a good first choice, but if that doesn't work, paint thinner should. The alcohol will dry out the wood even more, and may leave spots (as might the thinner). Once I have gone that far with a piece of wood, I usually take the next steps (each is optional):
  1. clean the entire bat (other than wrapped part) with alcohol
  2. glue separated parts (checks, etc) with wood glue, clamp with plastic ties.
  3. light sanding
  4. clean with liberal use of alcohol
  5. seal with wood sealer or Danish oil - choose color carefully, practice on something before applying
