Alcohol is always a good first choice, but if that doesn't work, paint thinner should. The alcohol will dry out the wood even more, and may leave spots (as might the thinner). Once I have gone that far with a piece of wood, I usually take the next steps (each is optional):
- clean the entire bat (other than wrapped part) with alcohol
- glue separated parts (checks, etc) with wood glue, clamp with plastic ties.
- light sanding
- clean with liberal use of alcohol
- seal with wood sealer or Danish oil - choose color carefully, practice on something before applying
